These charcoal animal drawings have been driven by my study of late 16th century natural history drawings (specifically Ulisse Aldrovandi’s collection in Bologna). Made just before an objective, empirical view became crucial to the study of natural history, these squirming animal drawings are syntheses of a vast pool of visual sources and systems of morality, faith and superstition. Work of art I would like to make

Over the past few months I have been collaborating with kids in order to make my own work. The project would be to continue this partnership on a larger and more experimental scale. My proposal has two parts:
1. commissioning work from children (aged 0-11, after this point they get self-conscious)
2. making my own sculpture and/or drawings from the children’s work

1. So far I have used drawings made by kids from their imaginations. For this project I would like to take a group of children to a specific site and encourage them to draw (or model) from observation. Such sites could be the cement dinosaurs at Crystal Palace, the Horniman Museum or London Zoo.
2. What I make depends entirely on the results from the kids. I hope to create a large-scale scene from their images, in charcoal or paint. The exciting bit for me is the process of forcing a ‘true’ anatomy into the outlines of the child’s idea of that animal. So the child’s drawing becomes a filter through which the creature must be distorted. Along with huge drawings or paintings I would like to make small, hand held rubber sculptures of animals, also seen through the kids’ responses.
