Christopher (Kit) Connor
(76 years old. Born in United Kingdom. Lives in: Brighton)
Brighton University

I worked both in television and publishing before returning to university to find a way back into art in the absence of commercial imperatives. My current work is about light and our perception of the shadows created by it. Projected shadows often create spatial ambiguities when, for example, they apparently dissect familiar objects and turn them into unexpected and powerful new shapes. Because my works are in relief different lighting conditions give rise to a variety of live shadows. My use of a restricted palette allows me to both emphasise and create depth and at the same time to confound expectations.

Projects
My current work is essentially based on photographs of subjects under variable light conditions. In parallel to this I am experimenting with three-dimensional models in which I create different shadow effects and then manipulate these. The funds would help towards the financing of a modest lighting set-up and in addition towards developing two time-based projects based on first the recording of crowd movements in public places. An example would be on a railway station (with strong overhead lighting) where crowds pour out of trains, their continually moving shadows overlapping, growing and diminishing in slow motion. Secondly I should also like to study the shadow movement of objects (bicycles and skateboards for instance) as they move between two fixed street lamps with consequent distortion of their shadows. The overlaying and inverting of the resulting digital clips would allow their interpretation in a variety of ways.
