I'm interested in the relationships between architecture, technology and cultural identity. Using computer-generated-imagery my work aims to break open the interstitial spaces brought about in moments of cultural transition and crossover. I see the field of computer graphics as especially paradigmatic of this; flitting between hobbyist and industrial activity, two seemingly disparate applications cross into each other, making the distinction between play and work difficult to discern. This tension forms the backdrop to a practice concerned with how the reproduction and representation of objects and architecture can alter how we perceive and define both culture and our relationship to it.

Work of art I would like to make

If selected I propose to make a series of computer generated models which would eventually be 3D printed sculptures, based upon areas of urban decay and regeneration in London. Based especially upon the areas directly surrounding rail and DLR routes, I would create a series of models which would be composite spaces, left frozen in a state of change; buildings which are falling down would become indistinguishable from those being erected, scaffolding would compete with ivy to overtake the same wall. I’m particularly interested in how the same “clean” technology and toolset provided by the computer (and used to design the buildings that are so essential to regeneration) could also be used to manufacture dereliction, and whether dereliction might be just as iconic to some parts of London as any concerted attempt to “re-brand” an area through architecture.
