My work is centred on humankind’s transcendence from animalism and our obsession with the sacred. The work employs ideas of masculinity within animal symbolism and mythology, such as strength, honour and courage, to explore personal issues of female identity, sexuality and spirituality. By creating my own narratives I feel I can begin to blur the contrast between the grandeur and masculinity of mythology vs. the primitiveness and feminine associations of the fairytale. My conversion to Atheism from Catholicism and my loss of spirituality has resulted in a romanticized longing for fulfilment and rekindling of man’s primordial spiritual drive which continually appears in my work.

Work of art I would like to make

I intend to create a plaster sculpture depicting a full-scale, woman figure. Reminiscent of a traditional gothic tomb, she lies face up on the ground with a miniature heraldic lion at her feet. Her pose mirrors that of a medieval knight, with her arms placed reverently on her chest as if holding a sword. The figure will be accompanied by a segment of text carved into wood, which reads ‘I serve’. The scene is intended to convey narrative elements of Arthurian legend and sleeping maiden fairytales. I aim to blur the boundaries between the esteemed, masculine legend and the humble, effeminate fairytale. The sculpture will exist as a contrast between gesture and detail, earthiness and gold, presented on a shroud of velvet and soil.
