SAATCHI GALLERY PRESENTS THE WORK OF ACCLAIMED FASHION PHOTOGRAPHERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Beyond Fashion will be open to the public from 31 May – 8 September 2024.
• Divided into four sections: Allure, Fantasy, Realism, and Surrealism, the exhibition tells the story of how fashion photography has become more than a commercial device and has evolved into an art form in its own right.
• Features more than 100 images from 48 photographers, including Nick Knight, Peter Lindbergh, Viviane Sassen, Paolo Roversi, Miles Aldridge, and Ellen von Unwerth – as well as an exciting new generation of fashion photographers.
Curated by Nathalie Herschdorfer, Director of Photo Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland and produced by the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography.

LONDON, UK – Saatchi Gallery is pleased to announce Beyond Fashion as the major exhibition for its Summer 2024 season. The exhibition, opening to the public on 31 May 2024, showcases the work of acclaimed fashion photographers from around the world. The works demonstrate how fashion photography has moved past the simple presentation of product lines to reflect on the reality of our lives, to explore our aspirations and to push at the boundaries of creativity. Curated by Nathalie Herschdorfer, Director of Photo Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland, and produced by the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography, the exhibition will feature more than 100 photographs from 48 photographers.

Including works by Nick Knight, Peter Lindbergh, Viviane Sassen, Paolo Roversi, Miles Aldridge, and Ellen von Unwerth – as well as an exciting new generation of fashion photographersBeyond Fashion celebrates the vision and creativity of these artists and image-makers, and documents how fashion photography has become a new and exciting visual language. It is presented during the milestone 40th anniversary year of London Fashion Week, an occasion to honour the entire community that drives innovation in the industry and beyond.

This major exhibition will be organised into four main sections: ALLURE, which brings together celebrations of timeless beauty; FANTASY, which pays homage to the creativity and inventiveness of photographers working in fashion; REALISM, showcasing artists working mostly in the street, playing at fashion’s intersection with the real world; and finally SURREALISM, which features the work of a new generation for whom fashion photography is about transformation, imagination, and magic.

Viewers will travel from the glossy setting of the photography studio to the grassroots of street photography and discover the vast and diverse forms which fashion photography can take. They will see some of the most iconic images, famous faces and dynamic brands in contemporary culture. From classic VOGUE covers to Victoria Beckham’s legs in Marc Jacobs’ shopping bag – this collection of works features supermodels and stars like Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and Christy Turlington; designers such as Christian Dior, Commes des Garçons, Alexander McQueen and Valentino, and street style legend The Sartorialist.

A special feature of the exhibition will be a section dedicated to moving images – highlighting the importance of film in today’s fashion imagery. This will present the works of SHOWstudio, the website founded and directed by Nick Knight, one of the first and most high-profile image-makers to adopt digital film as a medium for showcasing fashion. Established in November 2000 as ‘the home of fashion film’, SHOWstudio’s innovative and ground-breaking projects have defined how fashion is presented via the internet. Having pioneered fashion film, it is now recognised as the leading force behind this medium, offering a unique platform to nurture and encourage fashion to engage with moving image in the digital age.

The exhibition concludes with an installation entitled Under Your Smell; a project that invites visitors to experience an alternative and dynamic way to engage with fashion imagery. The students of the Bachelor Photography of the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne offer a visual interpretation of Jean Paul Gaultier’s perfumes. In a series of staged images, perfumes become the backdrop for stories of transgression and fantastical projections.

Throughout the exhibition run, Saatchi Gallery will present a number of Saatchi Lates from 6:30pm – 9pm on selected Fridays. Tickets include access to special Beyond Fashion-themed activations and workshops, the main exhibition, and ground-floor shows.

Nathalie Herschdorfer, Exhibition Curator: “At one time, fashion photography was perceived as limited to its commercial use. With the explosion of the internet and social media, the way photography is documented, consumed and shared has undergone a transformation. The emergence of a broader visual language has enabled a blurring of boundaries between editorial work, advertising and artistic expression within fashion photography. Nowadays, it is no longer regarded as a frivolous medium; it is elevated to the status of an art form, capturing the sustained attention of museums and galleries, auction houses and publishers alike. It is the art world’s rising star.”

Paul Foster, Saatchi Gallery Director: “The adornment of our bodies with colours, patterns, shapes, textures and materials has been a constant throughout human history. This exhibition showcases how the presentation of fashion continues to evolve and break new ground in an age of unprecedented image generation and consumption.”

Tickets start at £6 and are available to book now at saatchigallery.com.

SAATCHI GALLERY PRESENTS THE WORK OF FOUR ARTISTS LEADING THE CHARGE IN ECO-CONSCIOUS PHOTOGRAPHY & FILMMAKING

• Metamorphosis: Innovation in Eco Photography & Film features works by Almudena Romero, Edd Carr, Hannah Fletcher, and Scott Hunter
• The exhibition highlights the artists’ different approaches towards a shared goal of developing more sustainable practices
• Supported by Pasqua Wines, the exhibition is open to the public from 26 May – 28 July

LONDON, UK – From 26 May, Saatchi Gallery presents Metamorphosis: Innovation in Eco Photography & Film, an exhibition showcasing the work of four award-winning photographers and filmmakers who are breaking ground in their practices of eco-conscious photography and film – Almudena Romero, Edd Carr, Hannah Fletcher and Scott Hunter.

While photography has always been at the forefront of innovation and embracing change, the medium has historically been an unsustainable one owing to the toxic chemicals used in the development process, silver particle waste, camera manufacturing and disposal, and the storage of digital photographs.

The artists in this exhibition are leading the charge in eco-conscious practices, developing more environmentally friendly techniques, and inspiring positive change. With a particular focus on their relationship with materials, processes and methodologies, their works marry both the political and the poetic.
British-Spanish photographer Almudena Romero uses naturally occurring photographic processes including photoperiodicity, photobleaching and photosynthesis. The resulting works often take the form of delicate leaves which hold printed images. These are encased in resin so they can be touched and handled, like fossils.

Edd Carr’s material-led practice focuses on creating and utilising sustainable alternatives to photographic processes. He uses these methods to create films that comment on the human relationship to ecological crisis and the mass extinction of life, and the resulting trauma we face as a species. One of the leaders of Sustainable Darkroom, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the research, development, and advocacy of eco-friendly alternatives to analogue and digital photography, Carr also works closely with the organisation’s Founder and Executive Director Hannah Fletcher

Hannah Fletcher works with organic matter such as soils, algae, mushrooms and roots, which she transforms into photographic mediums and surfaces. She incorporates waste from her studio back into her work, contributing to a cyclical system of making.

Scott Hunter’s practice fuses photography, sculpture, and installation. His work focuses on developing alternative approaches to the toxic methods of analogue photography by using organic materials, which is known as eco-processing.

Supported by Pasqua Wines, this exhibition celebrates these artists’ unconventional and innovative approaches to unlock eco-consciousness and impact.

• Saatchi Gallery commissions multi-disciplinary artist Zak Ové for its annual garden at Chelsea Flower Show 2024
• Open to the public at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, 21-25 May 2024
• Featuring Ové’s Invisible Man sculptures, the garden will invite visitors to explore a Black Diasporic journey. Three distinct sections take influence from Africa, the Caribbean and the UK

LONDON, UK – Saatchi Gallery announces its 2024 RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden with British-Caribbean artist Zak Ové.

Titled Abeba Esse, the garden will depict a Black Diasporic journey, from Africa to the Caribbean, and ultimately the UK. Visitors will be led down a path through changing landscapes, encountering Ové’s Invisible Man sculptures along their journey. The African section reflects the idea of ‘Paradise Found’, which Ové describes as, “An autochthonous verdant, jungle scene, where plant life grows untamed in a raw and natural state.” Yet here, visitors will incongruously encounter a rocket ship sculpture, which takes influence from Afrofuturism, and invites the question ‘what is happening here?’

Moving into the Caribbean, visitors will see a change in the native lush flora and fauna of the islands to that of tilled earth with planted crops, typical of slave plantations. The gateway is marked by a change in the path – from the dark soil of the African jungle, to wooden planks that reference the slave ships that carried many through the infamous Middle Passage.

Finally, they will reach a quintessential English garden, featuring the kinds of plants found in stately homes and country houses, indicative of the power and wealth accrued in the UK through slavery. Throughout the garden, botanical labels record the names of historical figures, institutions and corporations who benefited from investments in slavery.

The garden, designed in collaboration with award-winning garden designer Dave Green, encourages important conversations about the themes central to Ové’s work – the African Diaspora, contemporary multiculturalism, globalisation, and the blend of politics, tradition, race, and history that informs our identities. Ové stresses that revealing and heralding the histories and skills of those that were rendered invisible is an important part of writing an inclusive history. He comments, “History can and should be accessed in different ways, so as to engage a variety of audiences, and educate and inform through unexpected mediums such as a flower garden.”

Its name – Abeba Esse – is derived from two palindromic words. Abeba – from Ethiopian, meaning flower and Esse – essences, the essential nature of something. Palindromes are read the same backwards as forwards – and that continuous movement is something that is echoed in Ové’s artwork, through time travel and the readdressing of the past to the present and the future.

Reflecting on his hopes for what visitors will take away from the garden, Ové says: “History is alive and with us every day, the past is the food on our table and the roof over our head. How we got where we are is often obfuscated by the way in which history may have been told. Here visitors have journeyed with the Diaspora and joined together with the sculptures to examine a past that has remained hidden yet beneath our very feet.”

Dave Green is an RHS Gold award-winning garden designer. With over ten years of experience working with the RHS, he specialises in creating beautifully tranquil escapes with an exceptional eye for detail.

ABOUT ZAK OVÉ
Zak Ové (b. 1966, London. Lives and works in Las Palmas, Canary Islands) is a British-Caribbean artist with a multi-disciplinary practice across sculpture, film and photography. His work is informed in part through the history and lore carried through the African Diaspora to the Caribbean, Britain and beyond with particular focus on traditions of masking and masquerade as a tool of self emancipation. Ové’s artworks explore the interplay between old world mythology and what he posits as ‘potential futures’, a space where he reinterprets existence into the fantastical. Ové uses modern materials, a sound clash of Caribbean and African colour and the reinvention and appropriation of everyday objects to bring his characters and scenarios to life. His work is a celebration of the power of play, the spirit of imagination in the blurring of edges between reality and possibility, flesh and spirit. In this way, Ové seeks to re-write a history for the future through heralding the past in a new light.

ABOUT ROYAL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY (RHS)
Since our formation in 1804, the RHS has grown into the UK’s leading gardening charity, touching the lives of millions of people. Perhaps the secret to our longevity is that we’ve never stood still. In the last decade alone we’ve taken on the largest hands-on project the RHS has ever tackled by opening the new RHS Garden Bridgewater in Salford, Greater Manchester, and invested in the science that underpins all our work by building RHS Hilltop – The Home of Gardening Science.
We have committed to being net positive for nature and people by 2030. We are also committed to being truly inclusive and to reflect all the communities of the UK.
Across our five RHS gardens we welcome more than three million visitors each year to enjoy over 34,000 different cultivated plants. Events such as the world famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show, other national shows, our schools and community work, and partnerships such as Britain in Bloom, all spread the shared joy of gardening to wide-reaching audiences.
Throughout it all we’ve held true to our charitable core – to encourage and improve the science, art and practice of horticulture – to share the love of gardening and the positive benefits it brings.

SAATCHI GALLERY PRESENTS THE DEBUT SOLO EXHIBITION OF SOFIA LASKARI

  • From 16 March, Saatchi Gallery will present the work of London-based figurative painter, Sofia Laskari, winner of the Robert Walters Group UK New Artist of the Year Award 2023
  • The exhibition will feature an extensive selection of works from Laskari’s ‘Body and Flesh’ series, previously only shown in part at smaller venues

LONDON, UK – Saatchi Gallery is delighted to present the debut solo exhibition of Sofia Laskari, the youngest ever recipient of the Robert Walters UK New Artist of the Year Award held at Saatchi Gallery. Selected in 2023 from a record-breaking 1,600 entrants, Laskari impressed judges with her strong storytelling, rich symbolism and exemplary technique.

This exhibition will showcase 19 works from her ‘Body and Flesh’ series, in which Laskari experiments with vibrant colours and textures to present vast surfaces of painterly flesh. Her often claustrophobic images – where powerful self-portraiture dominates in ambiguous recurring interiors – address feelings of isolation, distress, rage and vulnerability

Laskari’s work is deeply personal, offering a relatable exploration of the human experience. Her pieces delve into the physical and mental challenges individuals face, inviting viewers to ponder the complexities of life, prompting questions and encouraging thoughtful engagement with the narratives she presents.

Laskari has recently achieved her BA in Fine Art and has exhibited at APT Gallery, SPG Galleries, RBSA Gallery and London Biennale 2023. Her work has also been published in Start in Art and Art Market magazines.

Sofia Laskari: “It’s an incredibly exciting opportunity to present my first solo show at Saatchi Gallery. It means a lot to me when people can find ways to connect with my work on their own level of understanding. My work can be viewed as a visual diary of emotional and physical states of being, whether they be derived from a personal experience or a societal one.”

Lily Waterton, Programming Manager at Saatchi Gallery: “We’re thrilled to welcome Sofia back to Saatchi Gallery for her debut show, as part of our ongoing commitment to platforming emerging artists. Sofia’s raw and vulnerable work demonstrates the exceptional quality of emerging artists working in the UK and pays testament to the strength of our collaboration with The Robert Walters Group and UK New Artists in helping to discover them.”

SAATCHI GALLERY SPOTLIGHTS
CONTEMPORARY DUTCH FEMALE ARTISTS

  • From 8 March, Saatchi Gallery will celebrate the work of 10 contemporary
Dutch female artists whose practices range from painting to sculpture, textiles,
    and photography
  • Coinciding with International Women’s Day, the exhibition aims to reshape the
narrative for the current and future generations of women artists
  • Featuring a project which is an extension of Saar de Swart’s chess piece set,
(collection Rijksmuseum Amsterdam) with five contemporary interpretations
acting as a robust response to historical underrepresentation

LONDON, UK – Saatchi Gallery, in collaboration with artist-curator Louise te Poele, is proud to present Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: A Celebration of Dutch Female Artists.

When thinking of the Dutch Masters, why do only male artists come to mind? Addressing the persistent gender imbalance in the art world, this exhibition highlights the underrepresentation of contemporary Dutch female artists. It aims to provide a platform for experienced creators and emerging talents – fostering collaboration and solidarity among women in the arts.

Recent statistics reveal that less than 5% of artists in museums are women, a stark reminder of the historical dominance of men in the art world. Standing on the Shoulders of Giants is a symbolic act of elevating Dutch female artists, drawing inspiration from the rich history of artistic giants like Rachel Ruysch and Saar de Swart, but with a clear intent to reshape the narrative for the current and future generations of women artists.

Saatchi Gallery, a globally recognised authority in contemporary art, is the perfect platform for this exhibition. Since 1985, the gallery has presented emerging artists, contributing significantly to their recognition worldwide. Its continued commitment to supporting largely unseen and underrepresented artists aligns seamlessly with the mission of this exhibition.

Louise te Poele, this project’s curator and artistic director, stands at the forefront of this transformative initiative. Reflecting on her unique position as a Dutch female artist in London, she is dedicated to extending visibility to herself and her fellow female artists. The curated selection spans experienced creators and emerging talents, ensuring a diverse representation of visual narratives on an international stage.

Te Poele emphasises, “Your mind is as flexible as you allow it to be. This exhibition is a feast for thought, showcasing multiple dialogues and perspectives on our worldview. Embrace this openness and let your mind be nourished by the diverse insights presented here.”

Gallery 1 features a sculpture project as an extension of Saar de Swart’s chess piece set, (collection Rijksmuseum Amsterdam), as a symbolic representation of the void in the history of women artists. Five contemporary interpretations of key chess pieces crafted by Dutch female artists are a robust response to historical underrepresentation.

Gallery 2 delves into the autonomous work of contemporary female-identifying artists, presenting a diverse selection at different points in their careers. The artworks create a continuous dialogue between the self, each other, and the world, echoing the desire of female artists to be seen and heard.

SAATCHI GALLERY PRESENTS ARTIST RONG BAO’S DEBUT SOLO EXHIBITION

  • From 23 February, Saatchi Gallery will showcase works of Royal College of Art graduate and theCOLAB / Royal College of Art / Yorkshire Sculpture Park 2023 Award Winner, Rong Bao
  • The exhibition marks the first solo show at Saatchi Gallery dedicated to a female Chinese artist
  • The exhibition presents Bao’s practice across the media of sculpture, painting, installation and video, and spans 5 years of development and experimentation

LONDON, UK –Saatchi Gallery is delighted to present the debut solo show of Chinese artist Rong Bao. Rong Bao Is Me pays testament to Bao’s playful transformation of familiar objects through sculptural practice, prompting us to question our perception of the physical world. The exhibition will invite sensory interactions between audience and artwork, creating a playground of gestures that poke fun at the absurdity of posing order on society. Viewers should prepare to connect with their mischievous sides and participate in a world that pushes the boundaries of acceptability.

Marking the first solo show at Saatchi Gallery dedicated to a female Chinese artist, Bao’s diverse body of work will demonstrate her commitment to play in the form of sculpture, painting, installation and video. The exhibition will include large-scale inflatable sculptures from her ‘Floating’ collection such as ‘The Enigma’ – a project reflecting Bao’s fascination with the complexity and diversity of life and her ability to manipulate materials beyond their typical use.

Bao has earned recognition on both national and international platforms. Notably, she was selected as one of the Top 10 emerging artists for the China UCCA Lab x Perrier New Emerging Artists and shortlisted for New Contemporaries 2022. In 2023, Bao secured the coveted theCOLAB / Royal College of Art / Yorkshire Sculpture Park Award. She recently received the Gilbert Bayes Prize 2024 awarded by the Royal Society of Sculptors and the Connections Through Culture 2023 grants program awarded by the British Council.

Rong Bao: “Having my first solo exhibition at Saatchi Gallery is incredibly exciting, and to be the first Chinese female artist to have this opportunity makes this moment even more meaningful to me. I firmly believe that art should not be reduced to dry annotations of philosophy and theory. The artworks which we put on such pedestals should not become the standard paradigm of art. I hope my work can be enjoyed by all – whether you are 3 or 99, I invite you to leave your burdens at home and laugh heartily with me at the absurdity of life!”

Lily Waterton, Programming Manager at Saatchi Gallery: “Saatchi Gallery is delighted to be hosting Rong Bao’s debut solo show. This exhibition will immerse visitors in the playful, surreal, and provocative world of the artist, and explore the immense breadth and depth of her practice. We can’t wait to introduce our audiences to her work, which combines a tongue-in-cheek riposte to the norms and conventions of the gallery space with an impressive technical mastery.”

SAATCHI GALLERY PRESENTS THE LARGEST EXHIBITION TO-DATE OF WORKS BY WORLD-RENOWNED PHOTOGRAPHER EDWARD BURTYNSKY

  • From 14 February 2024, BURTYNSKY: Extraction/Abstraction will be open to the public.
  • Curated by Marc Mayer, former Director of the National Gallery of Canada, the exhibition will feature large-scale photographs, murals and augmented reality.
  • European premiere of Burtynsky’s multimedia piece, In the Wake of Progress
  • The Exhibition will use stunning imagery to explore how humanity impacts the planet and invites viewers to consider how we can find a sustainable way to live in the future.

LONDON, UK – Saatchi Gallery is pleased to announce BURTYNSKY: Extraction/Abstraction as the major exhibition for its Spring 2024 season. The exhibition, opening to the public on 14 February 2024, marks the largest exhibition ever mounted in the 40+ year career of world-renowned photographic artist, Edward Burtynsky, who has dedicated his practice to bearing witness to the impact of human industry on the planet. Curated by Marc Mayer, former Director of the National Gallery of Canada and Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the exhibition will feature 94 of Burtynsky’s large-format photographs as well as 13 high-resolution murals, and an augmented reality (AR) experience. A never-before-seen element in this exhibition, referred to as the “Process Archive,” will also showcase Burtynsky’s navigation through each of the technological shifts in the photographic medium that have occurred over recent decades. The exhibition will reveal Burtynsky’s life-long observation of humanity’s incursion into the natural world, and the environmental consequences of industrial processes.

Occupying two floors of London’s iconic Saatchi Gallery, this major exhibition will be organised into five main sections: Abstraction, Agriculture, Extraction, Manufacturing & Industry, and Waste.

A presentation of Burtynsky’s most ambitious project to date      — In the Wake of Progress — will be a special feature of the exhibition. This 22-minute multimedia experience, co-produced by legendary music producer Bob Ezrin (known for his work with Pink Floyd, Andrea Bocelli, Peter Gabriel, Taylor Swift and many others), will immerse audiences in the story of human industry’s impact on Earth, told through artistry and scale, urging us to rethink our legacy and seek a more sustainable future. Forty years in the making, In the Wake of Progress combines the most powerful photographs and film footage of Burtynsky’s career, choreographed to a compelling award-winning original score.

Through a deep historical understanding of image-making, and a mastery of the photographic medium, Burtynsky invites viewers to look at places that exist beyond our common experience, places that satisfy our wants and needs in the present while they determine the future of our habitat. Paired with the serious ecological concern that drives Burtynsky’s creative process is an equally compelling exploration of the strangely beautiful marks industry leaves on the canvas of the Earth.

The exhibition will also highlight both local and national organisations who are making positive contributions to the areas of sustainability, biodiversity loss, conservation and climate change through a dedicated interactive space and connected online materials.

Visitors will also be able to make a contribution to the exhibition by leaving a message of their own hope for a sustainable future.

Edward Burtynsky: “I have spent over 40 years bearing witness to the ways in which modern civilization has dramatically transformed our planet. At this time, the awareness of these issues presented by my large format images has never felt more urgent. I am grateful to be mounting the largest exhibition of my career at Saatchi Gallery in London, UK and I hope the exhibition experience will continue to provide inflection points for diverse conversations on these issues and move us all to a place of positive action.”

Marc Mayer, Exhibition Curator: “With stinging irony and unwavering technical mastery, Burtynsky’s pictures confront our complacency and trouble our arrogance precisely by flattering our increasingly devastated biosphere with ravishing pictures.”

Paul Foster, Saatchi Gallery Director: “This is an exhibition that reminds us how beautiful our planet is. Burtynsky has even captured how beauty remains evident in the ways that humans have exploited its resources for our own ends. However, these images are also a wake-up call for humanity to change its ways or face a precarious and uncertain future. I cannot think of a more important exhibition that we could have presented.”

PRESS RELEASE

THERE’S NO ART ON A DEAD PLANET
Ahead of COP28 M&C Saatchi Group & Saatchi Gallery Announce Six
International Winners of Art for Change Prize

  • The prize was launched as part of a shared mission by M&C Saatchi Group and Saatchi Gallery to make art, culture, and creativity accessible to everyone and identify the next generation of artists.
  • The prize aims to highlight and stimulate dialogue around visual arts as an active medium for positive global and social change, this year exploring one of the most urgent issues of our time.
  • The prize supports M&C Saatchi Group’s mission to deliver meaningful change in partnership with Saatchi Gallery and identify the next generation of artists exploring one of the most urgent issues of our time.
  • For the second edition emerging artists were invited to create new stories of a liveable future in response to the theme, ‘Regeneration’.
  • 6 regional winners announced from a total of 3,000 entries from 130 countries.

(London, UK, 24 October 2023) – Ahead of Cop28, when the world will be focused on one of the most urgent issues of our time, M&C Saatchi Group and Saatchi Gallery announce the six regional winners of their annual international art initiative, Art for Change Prize, which invited emerging artists from around the world to creatively respond to the theme of ‘Regeneration’ for the chance to win a grand prize of £10,000.

This year’s climate-focused prize celebrates the power of global creativity to transform the conversation around the climate emergency. The six winning artworks open a conversation to examine this topic from different global perspectives, look to create new stories of a liveable future and empower individuals and entities to act. It’s a call to action for meaningful change, recognising that there is no art on a dead planet.

The total number of entries increased by 20% from last year, totaling 3,000, from artists based in 130 countries, with over 56% of them developing nations from within Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Climate-related disasters are considerably increasing inequalities and injustices that already exist in the world[1]. Meanwhile cuts to arts education funding[2], coupled with pre-existing structural barriers, such as unpaid internships and low wages, have meant that opportunities for students and under-represented groups to interact with contemporary art have been significantly reduced. The prize was launched as part of a shared mission by M&C Saatchi Group & Saatchi Gallery to break down barriers to entry into the creative industry and enable people across the globe to choose art and creativity as a career choice.

A winner from each M&C Saatchi key global region (UK, Europe, Americas, Asia, Australia, and Middle East & Africa) has been carefully selected by some of the best business and creative minds from M&C Saatchi Group globally and a special selection of eminent guest judges*.

  • Americas Winner – IngridWeyland from Buenos Aires, Argentina for her work Topographies of Fragility XXXV and Topographies of Fragility XXXVI
  • Asia Winner – Haining Wang from Beijing, China for her work Molt
  • Australia Winner – Jen Valender from Melbourne, Australia for her work Sediment and Artist as Animal
  • Europe Winner – AlinaZamanova from Kyiv, Ukraine for her work Our Children are Fighting too
  • Middle East & Africa Winner – Chibuike Ifedilichukwu from Anambra, Nigeria for his work Equality State
  • UK Winner – Natasha Botelho Cook from London, England for her work The Garden of Dried Roses

Each winner in this not-for-profit initiative will receive a cash prize. The total prize fund of £20,000 will be split between the six regional winners, five to receive £2,000 each and one overall winner, due to be announced at the exhibition launch on the 29th November 2023, to receive £10,000. Additionally, all artists’ winning works will be exhibited in a dedicated exhibition at Saatchi Gallery, an iconic platform for contemporary art, from 30th November 2023 until 7th January 2024.

The overall winner will be selected by a Grand Jury lead by Chair of Judges, Justine Simons, London’s Deputy Mayor for Culture & Creative Industries and Founder and Chair of the World Cities Cultural Forum, alongside Saatchi Gallery Director, Paul Foster, and one M&C Saatchi Group judge from each region. The winner will be announced on 29th November 2023.*

Richard Thompson, M&C Saatchi Group UK Chairman, comments: “Now in our second year, we’ve been delighted to see the Art for Change Prize grow even bigger with 20% more entries from every corner of the globe. As a global creative solutions company, we believe we have an obligation to help identify the next generation of artists to help tackle the increasing barriers to entry into the creative industry.  Given the urgency and importance, Regeneration is a critical theme to explore to drive positive and social change across the world and is something M&C Saatchi are firmly committed to.

Paul Foster, Saatchi Gallery Director, adds: “The diversity and quality of works created by the regional winners of the Art For Change Prize this year take the breath away. These winning works remind us that contemporary artists have something important to express about how we live that is relevant to all of us. Someday soon, a work will emerge about the climate crisis that will have the same impact in the 21st century as Guernica did about war in the 20th century.

Sophie Morgan, TV Presenter, Writer & Disability Advocate, and UK Judge, comments: “It has been an absolute honour to be a judge for the Art for Change Prize, the caliber of entrees were truly amazing, and it was wonderful to see so many talented artists from all over the UK using their visual storytelling to tackle one of the most important issues of our time.

• From 15 November, Saatchi Gallery will retrospectively look at the career and achievements of artistic collaborators and life partners Christo and Jeanne-Claude.
• This is the last exhibition Christo signed off on before his death in 2020 and features seventy works which trace their historical development from the mid-1950s to 2020 and beyond.
• An exhibition organised by the Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf in collaboration with Saatchi Gallery, London.

LONDON, UK – As part of its Season of Sculpture, Saatchi Gallery announces an upcoming co-headline Winter exhibition, showcasing the largest retrospective of the renowned artist duo Christo and Jeanne-Claude ever in the UK. Titled Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Boundless the exhibition traces their artistic journey, from experimental beginnings in Paris across six decades of collaboration. The exhibition showcases rarely-seen works and offers a glimpse into future projects to be undertaken by the estate of the artists.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Boundless introduces visitors to the couple’s seminal projects, ranging from their early collaborations to monumental masterpieces, among them Wrapped Coast in Australia (1969), Surrounded Islands (1983) in Miami/Florida, The Pont Neuf Wrapped in Paris (1985), The Umbrellas (1991), installed simultaneously in Japan and the USA, The Gates in Central Park, New York City (2005) and The Floating Piers at Lake Iseo in Italy (2016). It also includes the perspective The Mastaba, a project for Abu Dhabi. This exhibition is the last to ever be signed off by Christo before his death and is divided into ten thematic chapters.

The exhibition reveals a story of love and artistic collaboration between Christo and Jeanne-Claude, celebrating their artistic synergy and profound connection, contextualised alongside their artistic contemporaries, including Jean Dubuffet, Yves Klein, and Lucio Fontana. Boundless unveils a vivid narrative of passionate determination, highlighting the couple’s refusal to be confined by traditional norms and how this distinctive approach, fuelled their creative vision and shaped their artistic journey.

Jeanne-Claude’s gift for communication and her tenacity became the driving force in realising projects, often over the course of decades. It was essential to their artistic ethos that their ambitious installations were funded independently. The exhibition showcases how drawings, sketches, prints, and collages were transformed into valuable currency, providing the foundation for realising their larger-than-life visions.

A climactic juncture in their journey is showcased through the breathtaking wrapping of the Berlin Reichstag in 1995 and the Arc de Triomphe in Paris in 2021. These monumental achievements embody their daring and creative prowess, demonstrating their ability to transform public spaces into artistic canvases.

Journey through the unrealised dreams that shaped their legacy, with insight into The Mastaba (project for Abu Dhabi), which will be an enduring monument to the couple’s boundless creativity. Larger than the Great Pyramid of Giza, this visionary concept stands as a testament to the enduring impact of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s expression and drive.

The exhibition was conceived and curated by Kay Heymer, together with co-curator Sophie-Marie Sümmermann and was first shown at Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf. Alongside Christo and Jeanne-Claude, the following artists are represented in the exhibition: Arman, Alberto Burri, César, Jean Dubuffet, Lucio Fontana, Raymond Hains, Yves Klein, Jacques Mahé de la Villeglé, Piero Manzoni, Arnulf Rainer, Niki de Saint Phalle, Daniel Spoerri, Antoni Tàpies, Jean Tinguely and Wolf Vostell.

Lorenza Giovanelli, representative of the artists’ estate: “Christo and Jeanne-Claude have a long history with the city of London. Their first project in London dates back to 1963 when they wrapped a female model in the studio of photographer and filmmaker Charles Wilp. Over the years, they returned many times and became close friends with art dealers Annely and David Ju-da, who, since 1971, organized more than a dozen exhibitions with Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

In 2018, Christo realized The London Mastaba on Hyde Park’s Serpentine Lake, his first major public out-door work in the UK. Now thanks to Ingrid and Thomas Jochheim, who shared a long friendship with the artists and have made their collection available to the public, the exhibition at Saatchi Gallery offers a unique opportunity to revisit Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s work on a large scale.”

As part of a Season of Sculpture Saatchi Gallery will be presenting If Not Now, When? at the same time as Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Boundless. Contact eleanor@saatchigallery.com for more information.

• From 15 November, Saatchi Gallery will showcase the work of female sculptors across an entire floor.
• Consisting of more than 30 original works, the exhibition will feature pieces by renowned artists including Kaur, Katrina Cowling, Phyllida Barlow, Helen Chadwick, Kim Lim and Cornelia Parker.
lf Not Now, When? Generations of Women in Sculpture in Britain, 1950-2022 is organised by The Hepworth, Wakefield in collaboration with Saatchi Gallery, London.

LONDON, UK – As part of its Season of Sculpture, Saatchi Gallery announces an upcoming co-headline Winter ehibition, If Not Now, When? The exhibition will feature 28 remarkable female sculptors, celebrating their contributions to the world of art from the 1960s to now.

This exhibition is the outcome of a two-year research project, Hepworth’s Progeny, guided by an Advisory Board of Griselda Pollock, Lorna Green, The Hepworth Wakefield’s curator Eleanor Clayton, sculptors Sokari Douglas Camp and Jill McKnight, and independent art Historian Dr. Alice Correia. The exhibition was co-curated by Dr Anna Douglas and Dr Kerry Harker. The project revisited research into women artists working in the expanding field of sculpture undertaken in the late 1980s by Green in her M.Phil thesis, The Position and Attitudes of Contemporary Women Sculptors in Britain 1987-89 at The University of Leeds.

The exhibition showcases renowned sculptors like Permindar Kaur, Katrina Cowling, Phyllida Barlow, Helen Chadwick, Kim Lim and Cornelia Parker, promoting diverse artistic interactions and practices. If Not Now, When? not only underscores sculptors’ resilience in male-dominated spheres but also celebrates women’s narratives and creativity.

Among the captivating works on display, will be Chadwick’s early masterpiece “In the Kitchen” from 1977, crafted during her MA studies, and Parker’s thought-provoking “Endless Coffee” from 2022. The exhibition will also feature works by artists who were frequently exhibited in the 1980s but whose art is now less commonly seen, highlighting the unique challenges many women artists face in their careers.

Divided into three chapters, the exhibition explores time as an everyday lived experience marked by the evolving cycles directly affecting women.

The first chapter, Women’s Time celebrates the unique feminine value as life givers, preservers, and carers of others. This chapter additionally encourages unrestricted conversations, highlighting real-world tensions and the idealisation of social roles inhabited by women.

Chapter two, Tumbling Through Time is preoccupied with the materiality and immediate urgency of issues such as climate change and the growing sense that time is of the essence. This chapter includes sculptures made from various recycled materials, including gilded fruit, neon, fabricated metal, and piano wire.

The final chapter, The Time is Now, addresses distinct moments in history and by bringing the works together into one space will present visitors with the reality of reoccurring injustices and discrimination that have been addressed by each artist as they created their work. Ultimately, however, the overarching theme is hope, created through the representation and visibility of artists critiquing cultural expectations of femininity and celebrating the gendered experience through their own unique views.

EXHIBITING ARTISTS

Phyllida Barlow, Glenys Barton, Shirley Cameron, Annie Cattrell, Helen Chadwick, Lorraine Clarke, Katrina Cowling, Deborah Duffin, Carol Farrow, Sheila Gaffney, Rose Garrard, Lorna Green, Mandy Havers, Bridget Heriz, Michele Howarth, Permindar Kaur, Rosie Leventon, Lilane Lijn, Kim Lim, Renate Meyer, Cornelia Parker, Christine Kowal Post, Victoria Rance, Freddie Robins, Veronica Ryan, Amy Stephens, Pamela Storey, Shelagh Wakely, Lois Williams

Dr Kelly Harker, exhibition curator and researcher: “We are delighted that If Not Now, When? is touring to the Saatchi Gallery, now with the inclusion of additional artworks. Visitors will encounter artists whose works have been seen rarely, artworks uncovered from archives, as well as art by emerging artists, all presented in a constellation of connections threaded through our theme of time. The exhibition builds on the feminist project Hepworth’s Progeny. Drawing on the life experiences of over 320 sculptor women, the research surfaced new narratives regarding the evolution of sculpture, and women’s creative lives, ambitions and careers post-war. It is gratifying that these important discussions will continue with audiences in London.”

As part of a Season of Sculpture, Saatchi Gallery will be presenting Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Boundless at the same time as If Not Now, When? with joint tickets made available to visitors online & ticket upgrades available at front of house. ABOUT THE HEPWORTH WAKEFIELD

Designed by the acclaimed David Chipperfield Architects, The Hepworth Wakefield is set within Wakefield’s historic waterfront, overlooking the River Calder and The Hepworth Wakefield Garden designed by Tom Stuart-Smith. Named after Barbara Hepworth, one of the most important artists of the 20th century who was born and brought up in Wakefield, the gallery presents major exhibitions of the best international modern and contemporary art. It is also home to Wakefield’s growing art collection – an inspiring resource comprising outstanding works of modern British and contemporary art. The gallery runs engaging programmes for schools, families and local community groups to provide inspiring creative learning opportunities and a vibrant workshop, talks and events programme, including regular art fairs and markets.

ABOUT HEPWORTH’S PROGENY

Hepworth’s Progeny is funded by a donation from the Holberg Prize awarded to Professor Griselda Pollock in 2020 for her work in feminist studies in the visual arts and art history, and to foster extended research in this field. The project was guided by an Advisory Board of Griselda Pollock, Lorna Green, The Hepworth Wakefield’s Senior Curator Eleanor Clayton, sculptors Sokari Douglas Camp and Jill McKnight, and independent art historian Dr Alice Correia. The exhibition is co-curated by Dr Anna Douglas and Dr Kerry Harker.

ABOUT SAATCHI GALLERY

Since 1985, Saatchi Gallery has provided an innovative platform for contemporary art. Exhibitions have presented works by largely unseen young artists, or by international artists whose work has rarely or never been exhibited in the UK. This approach has made the Gallery one of the most recognised names in contemporary art. Since moving to its current 70,000 square feet space in the Duke of York’s Headquarters in Chelsea, London, the Gallery has welcomed over 10 million visitors. The Gallery hosts over 5,000 school visits annually and has over 6 million followers on social media. In 2019 Saatchi Gallery became a charity, beginning a new chapter in its history. www.saatchigallery.com
