Department and information about the department

The Visual Arts program at Birmingham-Southern is dedicated to providing the opportunity and the environment for the best possible education in the visual arts at the undergraduate level. No single aesthetic or style dominates the curriculum, the faculty,or the work of the students. We believe in facilitating the imaginative depth and reach of the individual student/artist, and we seek to promote a climate of diversity and excellence. Art studio majors at Birmingham-Southern are given fundamental instruction in design, drawing, and theory in the freshman year. They may then pursue a concentration in one of the following disciplines: painting, photography, printmaking, or sculpture.

Art History majors follow a similar track with an introduction to the studio process, but with an involved concentration in Art History. Students may also choose to pursue a minor in either Art Studio or Art History.

Three degree programs are offered through the Department of Art and Art History. The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (BFA) involves a course of study emphasizing extensive professional preparation in studio art.

Student Support

Student Affairs handles a host of activities and services for students. Among these responsibilities are housing, student activities, student organizations, fraternities and sororities, and lost and found. This office also acts in an advisory capacity to the Honor Council. The Student Affairs staff works closely with the SGA in its presentation of activities, services, and programs.

The primary function of Student Affairs is to be of assistance to students in any way possible. If you have any problems, questions, or suggestions, feel free to come by. If Student Affairs can't help you, they will be able to direct you to someone who can, and if you don't have any questions or need any help, come by Student Affairs and volunteer your help. There are always projects going on...from making posters to planning programs and parties, or organizing Homecoming. If it has to do with students, Student Affairs can probably be found helping in some way.
