Colby-Sawyer College

Founded in 1837, Colby-Sawyer College is a dynamic liberal arts college with a tradition of excellence and innovation in education. Our Liberal Education Program offers our students challenging academic programs that integrate the liberal arts and sciences with professional preparation through experiential learning. Through all of our programs, the college encourages students to realize their fullest intellectual and personal potential.

Colby-Sawyer welcomed our eighth president, Thomas C. Galligan Jr., in August 2006. President Galligan assumes office at a high point in Colby-Sawyer's history, when the college has grown in student enrollment and the size of our faculty and deepened our academic programs. Simultaneously, the college has expanded and improved our campus facilities and residence halls, providing our students, faculty and staff with a vibrant environment for teaching and learning.

Department and information about the department

The Department of Fine and Performing Arts emphasizes an extensive, studio-based curriculum, a diversity of style and creativity, and the development of critical judgment and historical perspective. The intensive study of art is enhanced by an array of impressive resources that include spacious, well-equipped studio and performance facilities, small classes, and a dedicated faculty. The program addresses contemporary issues and promotes an atmosphere which is balanced between conceptual development and material exploration.

Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees are offered in the following concentrations: Ceramics, Graphic Design, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, and Photography.

Students also may major in Art Education with K-12 Certification or pursue a self-designed major in Arts Management. A minor in Art is also available.

Academic Staff and Description

All of our Art faculty members share a teaching philosophy which emphasizes respect for personal expression and individual creativity over pure technical mastery. They value the development of critical thinking and historical perspective as foundational to the problem-solving process. These common beliefs provide the basis for stimulating intellectual and creative inquiry.
