Cranbrook Academy Of Art

Only 150 students of exceptional promise comprise our two-year, full-time grad-only program. Our focus is to stimulate and nurture ideas through work, and develop the artistic skills necessary for a lifetime studio practice as serious artists, designers and architects. Students work in a professional studio environment, and are given the responsibility and freedom to develop an individual aesthetic voice and critical thinking with the guidance of their distinguished Artist-in-Residence/Department Head. There is no formal class structure, but an active program of studio work, critiques, reading groups/seminars, and student research projects in the ten departments. More than 80 Visiting Artists/Critics and the annual Critical Studies/Humanities program further the intellectual discourse. Students are in a peer group of highly motivated artists, learning equally from each other in student-led crit clubs, shared student Forum Gallery exhibitions weekly, museum visits and informal studio discussion.
The Academy is intimate, focused, and located in a world-renowned architectural environment. It is dedicated solely to graduate educ... [ Read All ]

Student Life

Student Life

The Art Academy is a community of artists. The social and cultural life of the students reflects their creativity and invention. Many student activities revolve around the student Forum Gallery, with weekly exhibitions and performances, and Slade’s, the student bar/lounge. Commercial and non-profit galleries in the area provide opportunities to meet area artists and show student work. There is also a wealth of live music venues in Detroit, where students can enjoy some of the best music in the world, from blues to jazz, rock to techno.

How To Apply

Cranbrook’s chemistry comes from the PLACE itself. It is a close-knit, international community of accomplished artists, designers, architects and craftspeople – all living and working within the same quarter mile. This ignites a true creative energy: a ‘ buzz’ that fuels passions, imaginations, collaboration, competition, dialogue, arguments, and friendships – ultimately leading to new ideas about art and design in our culture.

All programs are studio critique-based and focused on the creative act of ‘making.’ Theory serves as a conceptual tool, but in the end, it is the connection between idea and form that matters most. It is this principle that forms a common dialogue across disciplines at Cranbrook and makes it a truly unique place.

Cranbrook is ideal for self-motivated risk-takers who need the space, time, and supportive environment to explore and develop their individual voices.

Choosing a graduate program that fits your needs is a complex decision. Each institution and location has a different value. Certainly, the educational experience at Cranbrook is not found anywhere else, and we enthusiast...  [ Read All ]
