Escuela De Arte De Toledo

The Escuela de Arte de Toledo was created by a Royal Decree issued by Alfonso XII in 1881. Immediately afterwards construction work on the school began, under the direction of the architect Arturo Mélida.

The plan was to create a modern school building on the ruins of the neighbouring monastery of San Juan de los Reyes. The building is filled with exceptional details and vast spaces of great beauty and artistic quality. It has been named a Heritage site within the city of Toledo. In 1902 the school was inaugurated as the Advanced School of Art and Industry. A forward-looking educational model was established giving special support to the proletariat and women.

The Escuela de Arte de Toledo recently celebrated its centenary – 100 uninterrupted years of teaching the arts. At present students are able to develop their academic activity within a framework that allows the history of the school to sit alongside the most innovative artistic ideas harmoniously.
