Henderson State University

Henderson State University is one of only two American colleges in Arkansas originally established as a four-year, degree-conferring institution and is the second oldest university under state control. On-campus enrollment is some 3400 students. At present, degree programs are offered through the Matt Locke Ellis College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, the School of Education (Teachers College Henderson), and the Graduate School. In addition to its own degree program in nursing, Henderson also provides the academic program for the Baptist School of Nursing. The University operates the only aviation degree program in Arkansas and offers pre-professional studies. Henderson also now confers three graduate degrees.

Henderson’s art department through the years is consistently one of the campus stars. It offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts for studio majors and a Bachelor of Science in Education for (US) public school art educators. Both programs have an outstanding reputation for placement and for a wide range of art experiences.

Our Aims

Henderson State University is Arkansas?s public liberal arts university. True to the century-long tradition that has distinguished Henderson since its founding; the university remains dedicated to providing excellent undergraduate curricula and graduate programs. Henderson, a Southern regional institution with a diverse student body, advocates a program based on the liberal arts, regardless of specific educational interests. Through a common core of courses in arts and sciences, as well as through the more specialized curricula, the university fosters the maximum growth and development of each student. More specifically, Henderson endeavors to provide an education that will nurture in each student the capacity:

Student Support

Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded program sponsored by the United States Department of Education through TRIO (see next question). Its mission is to promote the academic success, retention, career planning and graduation of college students. All services are provided at no cost to qualifying students.

Federal TRIO programs help students to overcome class, social, academic and cultural barriers to higher education. SSS is just one of the TRIO programs. Others are Talent Search (for Junior High students), Upward Bound (for High School students), Educational Opportunity Center (for adults returning to college) and the Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program (for college juniors and seniors planning to attend graduate school).

There are 2,600 TRIO Programs on college campuses serving More than 465,000 students are assisted by TRIO programs that are located at more than 800 colleges and universities.

Student Life

Henderson State University has a tradition and history of providing quality education in an embracing atmosphere. Established in 1890, Henderson has the reputation of the ?School with a Heart,? and faculty and administration take that reputation seriously.

More than 90 student organizations await your participation at Henderson. In addition to departmental organizations such as chemistry club (which recently received commendation by the National American Chemical Society for the fifth consecutive year), Henderson offers a variety of activities including religious and political organizations, Greek fraternities and sororities, and honor societies.

Other than club activities, Henderson students have a variety of on-campus entertainment options available throughout the year. Student productions, faculty concerts, guest speakers and performers, and Gulf South Conference sports enrich evenings and weekends. Movies on the Quad ? outdoor events where students can see recent motion picture releases on a 20x30 foot inflatable screen ? are offered each fall and spring, free of charge.
