Kean University

Founded in 1855, Kean University has grown to become one of New Jersey's largest institutions of higher learning. In 1958, Kean moved from Newark to Union and currently occupies over 150 acres in Union and Hillside Townships. Kean was granted university status on September 26, 1997. While maintaining its significant role in the training of teachers, Kean has become a comprehensive institution offering 48 undergraduate and 28 graduate degree programs serving some 13,000 students. Across four undergraduate colleges and the Nathan Weiss Graduate College, Kean's academic programs cover an exceptional range of disciplines.

Department and information about the department

The Department of Fine Arts is prepared to educate students for careers in a variety of fine arts fields, as well as preparing students to teach art. The program offers a variety of degree programs for students interested in becoming productive artists and craft persons as well as art teachers and art historians.

The Department also offers a degree in Art History which prepares students to work in museums and galleries.

Information For  International Students

International Student Admissions is designed to accommodate those applicants who require a F1 Visa (I-20 Form) in order to study in the United States. More than 85 different countries are represented at Kean University. International students major in a wide range of academic programs and are required to pursue a full-time study. All such students must be issued an I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility) prior to applying to the U.S. Department of State Consular Office for a student (F1) visa.

Student Life

Student Organization, the full-time undergraduate governing body at Kean, is one of the most unique and reputable in the country. As an autonomous entity, Student Organization has become a progressive active force, known for its input in student life. The organization maintains an operating budget of over a half-million dollars and a full-time professional staff of three. Comprised of elected student officers receptive to the needs of all Kean University students, the organization strives to enhance the scholastic, cultural, and social environment of Kean University, as well as to promote student involvement in the development of all areas of student life on campus. Student Organization funds approximately 30 clubs, special projects and programs, in addition to academic and social activities for the students at Kean.  


The staff of Kean University’s Office of Residence Life has a single goal: to create an environment conducive to learning. To accomplish this, we are committed to supporting the differences among individuals within our community and, at the same time, to serving the needs of the University as well as the local and global community in which it exists.
