Lake Superior State University

Established in 1946 to address the needs of returning World War II veterans and to provide educational opportunities to the people of the Eastern Upper Peninsula, Lake Superior State University still embodies the essence of the early days. A personal education in a safe and friendly environment remains a hallmark of today’s LSSU.

Our beautiful 115-acre campus overlooks the Michigan and Ontario twin cities of Sault Ste. Marie, the St. Mary’s River, and the world famous Soo Locks. The school is located at the beginning of Interstate 75 which ends in the Florida Keys.

The campus served as Ft. Brady starting in 1894 after the fort was relocated from the banks of the St. Mary’s. The fort was deactivated in 1944 and, thanks to the efforts of local volunteers and leadership at Michigan College of Mining & Technology in Houghton, opened in the fall of that year as the Sault Ste. Marie Residence Center of MCMT. The Sault Branch was rechristened Lake Superior State College of Michigan Technical University in 1966. Autonomy arrived for LSSC in 1970. Location and Getting there

Driving Directions
Sault Ste. Marie is at the northernmost end of I-75; travel on I-75 to exit 394 (the last before Canadian toll bridge), the Easterday Avenue exit. After exiting, turn right on Easterday Avenue and continue to the first stoplight. Continue through the stoplight and proceed to the next light (intersection of Easterday Ave. and Ryan St.) and turn left. Continue on Ryan St. until you see the LSSU archway on the left and enter through there. At the first stop sign, turn right. The Admissions Office is the last building on the left; there is parking in front of the house.

Cross the International Bridge and immediately after the toll booths exit to your right. At the stop sign, turn left onto Eureka Street. When you reach the intersection, turn left onto the overpass and continue on this road (Easterday Avenue) until you reach the first stoplight.
