Limestone College

Limestone is an accredited, independent, coeducational, four-year liberal arts institution and a Christian, non-denominational college. Our programs lead to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Social Work, Associate of Arts, or Associate of Science degree.

When Limestone was established in 1845, it was the first women’s college in South Carolina and one of the first in the United States. In the late 1960s, Limestone became fully coeducational.

Today, Limestone enrolls 700 traditional day students on our main campus and 2,800 Extended Campus students at 12 sites in South Carolina and on the Internet. Our total enrollment is approximately 3,500.

Our day students experience a small, friendly, caring campus where they are known as individuals, not as numbers. They are challenged by well-educated and dedicated faculty, who genuinely care for the individual student. Beyond the classroom, our students participate in a wide variety of clubs, organizations, and 18 NCAA Division II athletic teams. They develop friendships which last a lifetime.

Department and information about the department

The Art Department at Limestone College seeks to develop the creative potential of its majors and to equip students for future careers in art. Specifically, the Department's objectives are to provide students with a sound foundation for work-related experiences in art, to prepare students for advanced degrees in their particular fields, to develop students' visual perception and sensitivity with an understanding of the aesthetic process, and to afford students a traditional and comprehensive background in the liberal arts. Small classes and close student-faculty interaction are the foundation for developing those objectives.

Academic Staff and Description

The Art Department offers majors in Studio Art, Art Education, and a concentration in Graphic Arts. We offer the best of two worlds, a curriculum that is flexible and constantly updated and facilities which are housed within an historic setting. We take pride in guiding our majors in becoming artists who are competitive and prepared for employment as teachers, graphic artists, free-lance artists, as well as for graduate school. Students are eligible for numerous scholarships as well as internships for upper level classmates. Lab assistantships and work studyprograms are also available. Because the department is small, the two full-time professors function as mentors to each student and work with students one-on-one.

Alumni

As Alumni of Limestone College, former students -- old and new -- remain members of the Limestone College family. And as family, we stick together through good and bad times. We're enjoying tremendous growth and success these days: increased day student enrollment, an extremely popular Extended Campus program, and a steady, sure renovation program for our historic campus buildings. So much of that success is due to the many alumni who have contributed their time, talent, and treasure to Limestone College's future -- and for that we are thankful beyond measure.

Student Life

Limestone College offers many opportunities for students to get involved in numerous organizations. Of course, student activity doesn't only occur at the student center. It takes place throughout the campus. Our Intramural Athletic Program uses the resources of Limestone College's excellent athletic complex: an indoor Olympic pool, eight lighted tennis courts with tennis pavilion, baseball and softball fields, a jogging trail, and a soccer/lacrosse field.

Students also contribute to The Calciid, the Limestone College yearbook, and The Candelabra, the student literary magazine of poems, essays, short stories, and art; the best student works are honored at Awards Day in the Spring.

And college life simply wouldn't exist without student organizations. Limestone College students participate in leadership programs, musical, religious, and academic organizations.

Accommodation

At Limestone College, your quality of life starts in the residence hall. Each of our rooms is fitted with Internet access, local phone service, cable, and refrigerator outlets. More importantly, entering students find an easy access to social life through their hall life. Every semester students can attend different programs on their halls. Programs like all-night movies and pizza parties help students socialize and meet people; programs on study skills and relationships, or community service programs help students to adjust to college life.

There are two full-time Resident Director and each hall has highly trained student Resident Assistants. Resident Assistants ease the transition from your home life to campus life. They welcome new students, refer students to many academic, social, and counseling resources, track and report maintenance and housekeeping needs, and maintain an orderly community of learning for residents on the hall.

We allow students who are living with their families and commuting from home to live off campus. We require students to live on-campus when they have fewer than 90 hours of college credit...  [ Read All ]
