Malaspina University-College is a comprehensive University-College, which has played an active role in the cultural and economic life of the Central Vancouver Island region since 1969. Over the years Malaspina Univeristy-College has grown into an institution with more than 12,000 full and part-time students in credit programs. In addition, some 2,000 students are enrolled in various contract and extension programs, and 10,500 students are taking continuing education courses.

Our Aims

The Visual and Applied Arts Department of Malaspina University-College is proud of its dynamic and experienced faculty of professional artists, designers and academics who are committed to preparing students for promising futures in visual culture. Our students receive rigorous instruction in art and design fundamentals, experiment with a wide range of technical and creative options, study ideas from the history of art and design, tackle practical issues in two and three dimensional media, and explore personal languages of expression.  


Location and Getting there

Malaspina University-College's main campus is located in Nanaimo on a spectacular 92-acre (37 ha.)site on the lower slopes of Mount Benson, overlooking the city of Nanaimo, Georgia Strait, and the Coast Mountains on the B.C. Mainland. The region is linked to the Lower Mainland through regular 90-minute ferry services and frequent 15-minute flights to Vancouver International Airport, as well as downtown Vancouver.

Information For  Undergraduates

Admissions and Registration
Becoming a student at Malaspina is a two-step process.

Admission: completing an Application for Admission form, providing official transcripts of marks, and meeting other program admission requirements.
Registration: selecting courses and paying tuition fees.
General Admission Requirements for University and Career/ Technical Programs
Canadian citizens and those with permanent residence status in Canada are eligible for admission to University and Career/Technical programs if they meet one of the following conditions:

graduation from a B.C. secondary school, or equivalent, with a minimum “C” grade in English 12;
previous degree from a recognized university;
visiting student from a college or university (a “Letter of Permission” from the home institution is required);
transfer student from a college or university (at least 24 transferable university-level credits completed);
mature student—at least 21 years of age (or will turn 21 in the first semester of admission) and has a minimum “C” grade in English 12.

General Information for International Students
Admission
Malaspina University-College accepts international students under one of the following conditions:

direct application;
institution-to-institution exchange program;
sponsorship through inter-governmental agreement;
winner of academic competition or international scholarship.
Admission to English Language Program (offered by Malaspina's English-as-a-Second-Language department)
High school graduation with 6 years of previous English language study – TOEFL, IELTS or other test scores are accepted but not required.
Admission to Degree, Diploma, and Certificate Program
Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Meet Malaspina’s English language requirements for academic programs.
First-year credit may be granted for most Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate (higher level) courses.
Academic programs may have additional program admission requirements and course prerequisites.
International students who are B.C. high school graduates must have a minimum grade of “C” in English 12 to enter directly into an academic program.

Malaspina University-College’s residences offer comfortable and convenient campus living. The buildings are located near the heart of the Nanaimo campus, close to classrooms, cafeterias, Library, Bookstore, Gym, Centre for International Education, Students’ Union Building and Student Pub. The Nanaimo Aquatic Centre, with a 50-metre swimming pool, gym and water slides, is adjacent to the student housing complex. The residences are managed by Western Student Housing Ltd.

The student residence village offers three types of housing:

Traditional (single rooms with semi-private bathrooms);
Residence houses (20 bed houses with single rooms and semi-private bathrooms);
Apartment-style residences (four-bedroom, two bathroom apartments).
All of the residences and apartments are fully furnished. Traditional and residence houses offer shared lounges and kitchens.
