Morehead State University - Art Departme

In 119 years, the sweep of history has carried Morehead State University and its predecessor institution, the Morehead Normal School, from one makeshift classroom to the high-tech world of Internet-based classes and a radio telescope/space tracking system which reaches from a campus ridgetop literally to the stars.

One student appeared on the first day of class in October, 1887, in a little, rented cottage where the Adron Doran University Center now stands. Tens of thousands of students have come from the foothills and mountains, the river towns and the hillside farms of East Kentucky and beyond to seek the means to a better life in this beautiful, forested valley. Our first president, Frank Button, and his widowed mother, Phebe, literally spent their lives bringing "a light to the mountains" by founding a church-sponsored school to train teachers. The institution came under state control in 1922 and achieved university status in 1966. Today, Morehead State University enrolls more than 9,000 students from 100 Kentucky counties, 42 states and 37 nations. They are enrolled on campus, at regional campuses in Ashland, Ja... Academic Staff and Description

Among the factors used to determine the quality of an art program is the quality of the faculty and of their research and professional activities. Many faculty are members of professional organizations and attend regional, national and international professional conferences. Studio artists present one-person or group shows at professional galleries, art museums or other universities. They also show their work in national juried exhibitions, where selection for inclusion in the exhibition is made by prestigious professionals in the arts. In conjunction with shows and juried exhibitions, they often give lectures or hold workshops. Faculty in more commercially oriented areas practice professional graphic design, web design or multi-media for business, education, and industry. All faculty are actively involved in student advisement. Through recommendations and professional contacts, they help students in employment searches and professional advancement.

Student Facilities

The Claypool-Young Art Building with its distinctive architectural style stands out on campus. One feature of the Claypool-Young art Building architecture are its north-facing skylights. With most of the studios situated on the north side of the building Morehead State art students have the advantage of working in studios with the north light so prized by artists and designers.

Each area of the program requires special equipment and studio space specific to the teaching of that discipline. For example the teaching of studio art requires welding and woodworking equipment, pottery throwing wheels, kilns, printing presses, easels and painting storage racks, special drawing tables and much more. Graphic Design and Computer Art require state-of-the-art computer equipment, software programs, scanners, printers and digital photography labs. Art History has a large auditorium with the latest slide projectors, screens and audio equipment for lectures.
