Department and information about the department

The Department of Art at The Ohio State University is one of the most comprehensive exclusively studio-based departments at any university in America. Students work toward undergraduate and graduate degrees, concentrating in areas of art and technology, ceramics, glass, painting and drawing, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. The department emphasizes interdisciplinary experience as well as the study of theoretical and critical activities of the studio artist. Art faculty members are active in teaching and exhibiting around the world. The department’s visiting artist program brings internationally known artists to campus to teach courses and to work with students individually. Department of Art programs are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

 


Information For  Undergraduates

Art & Technology

An interdisciplinary studio art program in computer mediated art, which includes digital imaging, multimedia, holography, interactive robotic sculpture , electronics, 3D computer animation, installation and sound. Students are encouraged to consider content and approaches that may not fit with the traditional definitions of art, while acknowledging the structured processes usually associated with technology and the sciences. The undergraduate Students in Art & Technology have access to several state of the art Macintosh labs, Fergus Gilmore Computer Studio which features multimedia software, digital video, high resolution slide scanners, film scanners, digital cameras, laser and ink jet printers. This new facility is utilized for exploration into 2D, 3D, and 4D imaging, animation, sound, web based works, multimedia and experimental. The Art and Technology Holography lab area supports two advanced holography labs that are jointly administered by the Department of Physics and the Art and Technology area. Information For  Postgraduates

Master of Fine Arts Degree Requirements

The M.F.A. degree is a two-year program, or a minimum of six quarters, designed to permit a
concentrated effort in a student's field of specialization. The degree is widely recognized as a
terminal degree for college teaching. The M.F.A. permits a wide range of options, and all hours
must be graduate level.

1. A minimum of 40 credit hours in the major studio field. A maximum of 18 thesis credit
hours (generally two to five credit hours are recommended), four graduate seminar
hours (895), plus two additional seminar hours (896) required for GTAs (can be credited
toward major studio requirements).
2. A minimum of 15 and a maximum of 30 graduate credit hours in studio elective, not
limited to one studio discipline. Examples: Department of Art Studio, Dance, Music,
Theatre and Design.
3. A minimum of 15 and a maximum of 30 graduate credit hours in the humanities .
Examples: History of Art, Philosophy, International Studies, Creative Writing, Criticism.

Student Facilities

As members of the University community, students in the Department of Art have the
opportunity to draw on a wide variety of resources that may be pertinent to their work. The
University Fine Arts Library holds over 40,000 volumes. Ohio State's Advanced Computing
Center for the Arts and Design is known internationally as one of the top centers for graduate
students focused in animation and 3D modeling. The History of Art Department has a comprehensive
slide and print collection of more than 450,000 items. The Wexner Center for the Arts presents
exhibitions, dance, film, and performances by nationally and internationally known
contemporary artists.  


Accommodation

The Ohio State University is bordered on three sides by residential neighborhoods, and
housing is reasonably priced and readily available: rents range from $300 a month for studio
apartments to $600 for a three-bedroom house. Most graduate students live within ten
minutes of school.
