Schreiner University - Visual Arts

An independent and coeducational university, Schreiner has a colorful history rich with Texas heritage and traditions beginning in 1923.

Schreiner was founded in that year when a Hill Country rancher, merchant and former Texas Ranger, Captain Charles Schreiner , asked the Presbyterian Church to help him put bricks, mortar, and people around a dream he had nurtured for many years. He donated land along the Guadalupe River and together they established "facilities for high grade instruction and military training to boys and young men as preparation for college and university work."

Not a Presbyterian himself, it is said that Captain Schreiner chose to work with the Presbyterians because their charter most closely resembled the constitution of the United States.

Schreiner's first students came in 1923 from remote ranching communities. But news of the prep school and nurturing atmosphere spread quickly. Our Aims

Kerrville is nestled deep in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, where the natural beauty and ambience of the hills, trees, and rivers create the ideal atmosphere for education, art, music, fine dining, outdoor recreation, resort lodging, and more.  

Department and information about the department

The Visual Art program seeks to provide an environment allowing for the exploration of creativity in the areas of Ceramics, Graphic Design, Computer Graphics, Two and Three Dimensional Design, Drawing, Illustration, Photography, Electronic Imaging, Portfolio Design and Art History. Unique travel, cross-discipline and art history topics are also offered. Students are encouraged to develop an interdisciplinary approach to learning by recognizing the many relationships existing between the visual arts and other disciplines. Emphasis is placed on developing student creativity through individual problem-solving. Foundation courses are designed to introduce formal elements and principles, materials and techniques, and the development of concepts. Lower division courses introduce students to various creative mediums. Upper division courses provide continued study of specific media, advanced compositional and conceptual problems, and the development of related and marketable skills. All students are required to develop and fabricate a professional portfolio in original and digital forms.
