Southampton Solent University

Southampton Solent University is one of the UK's newest universities, since we became a university in July 2005 and officially changed our name on 15 August 2005. But although our name is new we're already well known for the distinctive way we link together student learning, applied research and service to business and the community. In this way we give our students the best learning experience and the best start to their future careers that we can.

We offer our 16,000 students a choice of courses ranging from foundation 'level zero' years that lead onto degree courses, to master's degrees and PhDs, plus a variety of professional and short courses. Since 1992 we've awarded more than 100 research degrees.

At Southampton Solent University we educate for careers and for life, transforming potential into long-standing achievement, creating exciting opportunities and giving our students the confidence to achieve their goals. We are committed to teaching excellence, with lecturers who have real-world experience and strong ties to business and industry.

News and Events

Southampton Solent University students’ work going live

A new arts exhibition company is launching in Southampton this weekend in response to the lack of open art exhibitions in the South East.

South East England Arts (SeeArts) opens with its first exhibition, ‘In the Mix’, on Saturday, 3 March at Harbour Lights Picture House in Ocean Village.

The company is run solely by local businesswoman Danielle Baillie from Bitterne in Southampton. Its aim is to provide opportunities for local artists from diverse backgrounds - including socially excluded groups - to exhibit paintings and publicise their work.

The exhibition is open from 12 noon until 10.30pm from Saturday, 3 March until Saturday, 24 March. All art work is for sale, with free delivery within the Hampshire area.

Student Testimonial - Andrew Dicker
BA (Hons) Graphic Design, 2003 Graduate

The ability to work swiftly and independently is the most important thing you can take into a job. I learnt to do this at Southampton Solent University.

I came to Southampton Solent University after doing a Foundation course at Loughborough University. The interview process was the clincher in making Southampton Solent University my first choice.

While most of the other university interviews were intimidating and irrelevant, SSU came across as friendly and informal and genuinely interested in my work. The course proved to be well-structured and helped me develop professionally as a graphic designer.

Since graduating in 2003, I've worked as a graphic designer with Grundy and Northedge Information Designers in London. The company is a well-established design studio and has impressive clients such as the United Nations, The World Bank, The World Health Organisation and Action Aid.

I worked well on briefs for these clients and my ultimate goal is t...  [ Read All ]

Accommodation

Once we've given you an unconditional offer, you can start looking for a place to live.

Peace of Mind

Student Residences are extremely sociable, not to mention great fun, and offer the chance to mix with people from different courses. Close to the campus, we have over 2,300 study bedrooms spread across six Residences in the city. All rooms have cable points for Internet connection and 1,000 rooms are en-suite. They're clean, comfy and have shared kitchen and laundry facilities, and some have TV lounges. There are Residence Assistants/Managers and excellent security features.

A Place of Your Own

Of course you don't have to opt for Residences. You could go for private rented accommodation, either as a lodger or sharing a house or flat with some friends. If you get in touch with our Accommodation Office, they can provide you with a list of properties over the summer months and a price guide. It's a good idea to start looking as early as possible before your course starts and make sure you visit the accommodation to see if it suits you and confirm that the rent is affordable. We have a city-wide landlord accreditat...  [ Read All ]
