The University Of Art And Design Helsinki

The University of Art and Design Helsinki gives education and pursues research in the fields of design, motion picture, audiovisual communication, art education and arts. There are six schools and sixteen fields of education and research. The University is the largest art school in Scandinavia: there are nearly 1700 students, 14% of which come from abroad, and 400 teachers. Furthermore, 1700 students participate in extension studies annually and 800 students in the studies at the open university.

Nearly 3000 persons apply to University of Art and Design Helsinki annually, and an average of 9% are accepted as students. A B.A. degree (Arts and Design) takes three years and a M.A. degree (Arts and Design) takes five years. It is also possible to defend a doctorial dissertation: so far more than twenty doctors have taken their degrees.

Information For  Undergraduates

Bachelor of Arts, a three-year lower-level university degree (180 ECTS)
Provides the student with the basics of factual, artistic and practical skills required in professional tasks in the field of design and applied art.
Provides the necessary skills for studies leading to the Master of Arts degree and research in design and applied art
The Bachelor of Arts degree can be completed only in the Finnish language.
Application for admission once a year. The instructions for application are announced at the beginning of the year. The application procedure is in two stages.

Information For  Postgraduates

Master of Arts, a two-year higher-level university degree (120 ECTS)
Provides the students with the skills for engaging independently in demanding tasks requiring expertise in the field of design and applied art, for independent artistic work.
Provides the necessary skills for studies leading to the Doctor of Arts degree.
The Master of Arts degree can be completed in English or Finnish.
Application for admission once a year. The programmes in English, application times and instruction are announced at the beginning of the year.


Doctor of Arts, postgraduate degree (80 ECTS + doctoral thesis) 4-5 years
Students gain a thorough knowledge of their own fields, exhibiting independent and critical thinking and achieving the skills for independently producing new researched information, new methods of artistic execution or products meeting high artistic requirements. The doctoral thesis may include and artistic production.
The Doctor of Arts degree can be completed in Finnish or English.

Accommodation

It is difficult to find reasonably priced student housing in the Helsinki metropolitan area. UIAH students can apply for housing via the HOAS (The Foundation for the Student Housing in Helsinki Region) organisation. The available flats and apartments are generally unfurnished. Rents vary from € 150 to 220 per month.
