Department and information about the department

There has been art and design education in Wolverhampton since 1851.

Fast forward 100 years and Art and Design was one of the cornerstones of the Polytechnic of Wolverhampton when it formed, and integral to the transformation to university status in 1992. The neon-lit tower was the first purpose-built art and design education building in the UK. Jump forward a decade and a half further, and what you see before you is a School that has just completed a top to bottom, £7m re-fit on all seven storeys of its landmark tower on the City ring road.

The refurbishment of studios and facilities has created some of the most up to date spaces and equipment for design excellence in the country.

Around 2,000 students from the region and beyond, nationally and internationally, contribute to a creative community that has breadth as well as depth in art and design disciplines.

From Fine Art and Photography to Graphic Communications, Ceramics, Sculpture and Glass, Textiles to Interior Design, Digital and Interactive Media to Wood, Metal and Plastic, the School focuses on the best in traditional and contemporary practice.
