Historical Highlights
The Universidad de Chile is an autonomous, public, national institution. It is the oldest and most important university in the country and one of the most prestigious in South America. In the past 162 years, its professors and alumni have developed the laws, the institutions and the social, political, economic, artistic and cultural frame of Chile, and have been a strong influence in other Latin American countries.

Location and Getting there

The Universidad de Chile is an urban institution, located in the city of Santiago, capital of Chile and center of political, economic, social and cultural activity. At the base of the Andes Mountains, at an altitude of 500 meters above sea level and 120 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, Santiago has a population of more than 6 millions inhabitants.

The Universidad de Chile has campuses in different areas of the city, the most important being: Campus Andrés Bello; Campus Juan Gómez Millas; Campus Antumapu; Health Campus and Engineering Campus.

Academic Structure and Curricula
The Universidad de Chile is composed of the main administration, 14 Faculties and four Interdisciplinary Institutes, with an enrollment of 23,459 full-time regular undergraduate students, and more than 5,134 graduate students working for their master’s or doctoral degrees, in all areas of knowledge.

La Dirección de Relaciones Internacionales (DRI) está encargada de promover, fortalecer y expandir las vinculaciones internacionales de la Universidad de Chile, que beneficien directamente la gestión y desarrollo de los programas estratégicos de la institución. Para ello se coordina con las unidades académicas (Facultades, Institutos, profesores y estudiantes en general), con las divisiones centrales de pregrado, postgrado e investigación.

El objetivo base de las tareas de la DRI se enmarca en un proceso de internacionalización de la Universidad, que se cumple a través de un conjunto de políticas y acciones que estimulan un mejor uso de las oportunidades de cooperación abiertas en el mundo para la educación superior.

News and Events

The Academic Year
The academic year is divided in two semesters of 18 weeks each. The First Semester begins on the first week of March, ending in July. The Second Semester begins at the end of July, ending in December.

Visiting students may undertake studies for a maximum time of two semesters or one academic year, ending each period in a formal transcript to be recognized in their universities of origen. Visiting students are non-degree in Chile.

Fields of Study
The Universidad de Chile offers international visiting students freedom to select their courses of studies, according to previous academic experience and ability to work in Spanish, allowing them to request registration in any course offered during their stay.

Courses may include subjects in the natural sciences, engineering sciences and technology, agriculture, pharmacy, forestry sciences, chemical sciences and technologies, environmental sciences, veterinary sciences, social sciences, economics and management, political science, international studies, law, fine arts, music, architecture and urban planning, design, geography, languages and literatures, and human...  [ Read All ]


Information For  Undergraduates

Undergraduate studies are mainly oriented to professional training. Students after five or more years of full-time studies obtain an accreditation for professional activity in their fields. This concentrated curricula in a specific area of knowledge and expertise is different to the Bachelor’s degree curricula offered in other countries.
 


Information For  International Students

The purpose of the Student Mobility Program is to offer the opportunity to international university students to undertake undergraduate or graduate studies at Universidad de Chile, for one semester or one academic year, and a similar opportunity to regular Universidad de Chile students at foreign higher education institutions, as a way to incorporate an international dimension to their university training.

The Student Mobility Program is managed by the Drection of International Relations and has two specific Programs:

a) Study Abroad and
b) International Visiting Students

International Visiting Students’ Program
International visiting students share courses with regular students at Universidad de Chile, for one semester or one academic year, registering courses offered at any Faculty or Institute, according to previous university experience and level of command of Spanish, language of instruction. Each personal program of studies is determined once the student is in Chile and has been admitted in the selected courses.

 


Student Facilities

International visiting students enrolled at Universidad de Chile can make use of all services offered to regular students, which comprise basic health services (international health insurance is compulsory), students welfare services, legal counseling on emergencies, cultural activities, sports, cafeterias, libraries, etc.

The Student Mobility Program offers academic assistance and counseling from arrival to the University and all through the stay, and it offers a computer room for registration of courses, e-mail, and academic work.
 


Student Life

Costs

The Universidad de Chile does not offer scholarships or financial aid to international visiting students. Students must provide their own financial support for round-trip transportation, tuition fees, housing, meals and personal expenses.

Costs of studies consist of a matriculation fee (non-refundable) of USD$150.00 (one hundred and fifty American dollars, or equivalent) for each semester, and a variable tuition fee, related to the number of courses and hours a week of attendance. Students must pay those fees in full once registration of courses is completed, and within the first month of academic activities.


 


Accommodation

The Universidad de Chile has no dormitories or housing facilities for visiting students. The Student Mobility Program offers information for lodging at private homes. The average monthly cost for lodging and meals is around USD$600.00.

 


How To Apply

Course registration

At the beginning of each semester, the Student Mobility Program offers academic advising to each international visiting student, and access to electronic information for selection and registration of courses.

Students must register the courses they select at the beginning of the semester, and they have a two-week period to drop or change their personal academic plan of studies.

Course registration gives place to issue an Universidad de Chile student’s identity card (TUCH) with a picture, which enables the student to make use of student services offered by Universidad de Chile.
