Virginia Wesleyan College

A young college, Virginia Wesleyan was chartered in 1961 with support from the United Methodist Church. In 1966, a small group of 75 pioneering students started at the new four-year, private college – the first of its kind in South Hampton Roads.

We are so dedicated to the value of a liberal arts education that our vision for the college is "to become a Phi Beta Kappa-caliber college." PBK is the most prestigious liberal arts organization in the country, and our goal of obtaining a chapter on campus demonstrates how serious we are about the liberal arts. We've got BIG plans for enhancing our campus and our programs so that we can attain this designation.

Department and information about the department

Art and Art History

As today’s society becomes more visual, the visual arts play an increasingly important role in contemporary life. At Virginia Wesleyan, studio art courses offer students the opportunity to explore art meaningfully by learning about its many aspects and having the enriching experience of creating it. Courses in drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, crafts, computer art, photography, printmaking, and other media offer opportunities for building technical skills and aesthetic awareness. The study of the History of Art, both of the Western and non-Western traditions, is an integral part of the art program. Classroom learning is supported by a program of art exhibitions, which include changing art exhibitions in the Hofheimer Library Gallery, the display of the Sheaks Collection in the Barclay Sheaks Gallery of Godwin Hall, and the campus-wide display of the over two-hundred piece Collection of Outstanding Student Art. Occasionally the art faculty select student artworks for purchase; these become part of the College’s permanent collection. The art department sponsors numerous field trips to museums and galle...  [ Read All ]

Student Support

Financial Aid
We don't think that limited financial resources is a reason not to come to Wesleyan. That's why more than $4,000,000 in financial aid and institutional scholarships was awarded to students last year. Eighty-five percent of students receive some kind of financial aid, ranging from $1,000 a year to full tuition, room and board. The Director of Financial Aid is available to counsel you and your family regarding financial planning.

Student Life

Let's get real. One of the best reasons to go to college is to make new friends. As a Wesleyan student, you'll form life-long relationships with people from Virginia, the East Coast, the nation and the world. We embrace diversity and celebrate the differences that every person brings to our community. With a small student body of approximately 1,400 (more than 700 residential students), you will be more than a face in the crowd or a number on a form. Faculty and staff members will call you by name. And you'll probably never pass someone on the sidewalk without getting a friendly smile and a hello!

Accommodation

Inspired by Thomas Jefferson's concept of the Academic Village, living and learning are intermingled in our three residential villages. Villages are split into halls for community living – single rooms, suites with kitchens, and apartment-style living are also available. All rooms include cable, telephone, a microwave, refrigerator/freezer unit and, of course, Internet access. And, if you do not have a computer of your own, there are plenty of computers available in campus computer labs.

Your to-do list
Have your application form completed, signed and accompanied by the application fee.

Provide an official copy of your SAT or ACT scores, if not included on the high school transcript.
