Chelsea College Of Art And Design

Chelsea offers specialist, student-centred courses that range from foundation to research degrees. The College's reputation for excellence in teaching and learning attracts students, staff and visitors from all over the world. This generates a lively community in which specialist and professional skills and knowledge are imparted and shared, encouraging enquiry and debate into how and why the arts shape our contemporary environment.

Location and Getting there

Chelsea College of Art and Design recently moved to a single site campus on Millbank, opposite the world renowned Tate Britain museum.

How to get to Chelsea:

By tube
Chelsea is 5 minutes from Pimlico tube station or 10 minutes from Vauxhall, both are on the Victoria line.

By Bus
2, C10, 36, 77A, 88, 185, 436 all pass near the College.

By Train
Nearest mainline train stations are Vauxhall and Victoria, either walk from Vauxhall or get the tube or bus to the Pimlico area.

There is no parking available on the Millbank site however there is limited car parking in streets alongside the College on Atterbury St and John Islip St: metered Mon-Fri 8.30am-6.30pm (Pay and Display £1.50 per hour, 2 hours max), free 6.30pm onwards, weekends and Bank Holidays.
 


Department and information about the department

Broadly speaking, Chelsea's interests and expertise lie in the following areas of contemporary practice:

fine art (new digital media, painting, sculpture, installation, performance, work for galleries and for specific sites);
graphic design communication (a contemporary approach to graphics, including interactive web design);
interior and spatial design (new architectural concepts, furniture and installations re-defining living spaces, refurbishment of existing buildings);
textile design (for fashion, furnishings and new functional and environmental applications);
and
research into the history and theory of visual and multimedia cultures (modernity, identity, materiality, the production and status of the arts, cultures of collecting, consumption of style, performativity, narratives of space and place, environmental and ethical agendas of making art and design).

    Alumni

    Chelsea College of Art and Design trained a number of world famous artists including Turner Prize winners Anish Kapoor, Chris Ofili, Gillian Wearing, Steve McQueen and Richard Deacon, as well as Gavin Turk, Rebecca Warren and Mark Wallinger. Our alumni also include hollywood actors Ralph Fiennes and Alan Rickman, illustrator Quentin Blake, and founders of the couture fashion label Marchesa.  


    Student Facilities

    Moving to the Millbank site along with winning money from a government sponsored fund in teaching and learning the College has been able to invest in purpose-built, state-of-the-art facilities. We offer superb workshop facilities within wood work, metal work, ceramics, textiles and model making. We also have extensive digital workshops in photography, printing, fabric printing, graphics and new media.

    Expert technicians in all of these areas are on-hand to offer guidance and support, many of whom are also practicing artists or designers, as well as taking teaching qualifications.  


    Student Support

    Student support is offered both centrally by the University of the Arts London, along with a part-time advisor being based at the Chelsea campus. They providing advice and guidance to home and international students about money matters, immigration, careers, disability, health, counselling and childcare, as well as a chaplaincy service.  


    Student Life

    Being based in the centre of London enables Chelsea students to enjoy a vibrant lifestyle catered to all tastes. There is an active students' union at the Millbank site, who represent you at College level for support in your studies, offer part-time jobs and voluntary placements, give advice and counselling, organise events and exhibitions across the University, run the clubs and societies and of course the infamous Chelsea bar!
