Birth of Figure

2003

Pen, Pencil, Acrylic Paint, Felt-Tip Pen and Chalk on Paper

36.5 x 72cm
In Tal R’s drawing Birth of Figure, a disembodied female body gives birth to a series of modernist sculptures. Primitivist in form, reminiscent of Brancusi and Picasso, they loiter expectantly as yet another African- inspired head emerges from between her legs.

Tal R’s vision of creative fecundity is both a literal and a wildly anarchic one: the spaces of his drawings seem fit to burst, jammed as they are with distorted characters, old-fashioned technology and nods and winks to both artists of the modern past and the ideas of artistic genius with which they were fixated. So gorged with detail are his drawings that, to allow more room, their spaces are either tipped up, like a collapsing table (Cream 13) or vertiginously zooming (Spiral Bar).

In the latter, a vortex of shelving spirals inwards, its alcoholic contents – pints, bottles, horns, kegs – apparently to blame for its woozy spin. Fantastical delusion (whether artistic, erotic or drunken, or a combination of the three) is a running theme in Tal R’s work.

In Pyramid Player, a beehive-haired pianist jams on a pyramid’s apex, as an audience of paired animals watches from below, a comic vision of artistic indulgence: Freddie Mercury as pagan idol. And yet there’s a celebratory quality in the artist’s vignettes of creative abandon.

The muumuu-clad potter in Inside Out, filling her studio with endless lumpy forms, is a parodic version of the artist himself: consumed with the pleasure of making, regardless of its apparent absurdities.
