|What little I am able to remember vividly from life. as a person of little memory, are mainly attempts at translating or understanding obscure emotions. I have trouble recalling occasions that evoked such straightforward emotions as "sadness" or "happiness". Rather, the memories that readily surface are of awkward or regrettable social interactions.
My work in photography, video and sound considers the problem of creating understanding between individuals and the strange conventions we establish in an effort to do so.
The majority of photo work is from my Portrait series, in which I indulge my musings on social abnormality. From an infinite scope of possible human behaviors, sounds and expressions are whittled dwon a select stock of socially acceptable ones, ones that convey mental and emotional stability.
The odd behaviors and expressions of the photographs' charactors abandon the oft-sought goal of social normalcy. Their absurd spiritual and visceral experiences manifest escapism, spiritualism and mania in a sort of hats-off to eccentricity.
Working in sound and video, I gratify my curiosity over desperation and the pursuit of significance. Beyond the gamut of words and behaviors for transmitting meaning comes the desire to stretch the transmission over a length of time. My current works in sound and video create pitiful attempts at significance.
