Art work Description:
Neil Zakiewicz graduated from his MA in 2003, and now works from his studio in Stratford, London. Since graduating Zakiewicz has had his first solo exhibition ‘Monumental’ at BEARSPACE in 2006 to great critical acclaim. The artist has had reviews in Art Monthly, Flash Art International & well as Flux magazine. Zakiewicz has recently shown at Galerie Lucy Makintosh, Lausanne & ‘Spain in Pain,’ at ‘Liquidation,’ Madrid. The artist was selected for a poster project with ‘Platform for Art,’ and shown in ‘Post Notes’ at the ICA in 2004. Zakiewicz’s sculptural works plays with the notion of the monumental and sculpture in art practice. The artists uses a variety of material, often balancing soft foam against hand carved wood, playing with texture, weight and subject, he creates work which is poignant and playful. Often returning to notions of ‘craft,’ and the almost kitsch representation of the hand of the artist akin to the hand of God, Zakiewicz both celebrates & pokes fun at this type of representation in an age when craft seems outdated. Neil Zakiewicz will be showing at ‘Colony,’ Birmingham later in 2006 and is planning an exhibition based on relief work at BEARSPACE in 2007.
