devening projects + editions is very pleased to present Dianna Frid: The Vertical Shadows, an exhibition featuring two new projects that include sculpture and works on paper. This is Dianna Frid’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.
For The Vertical Shadows, Frid designed and built plinths before conceiving the objects that each would support. As such, she revisits and reverses the model established by Brancusi nearly a century ago, in which the pediment was formulated well after the sculpture was “finished.” Each plinth in The Vertical Shadows is articulated out of a series of geometrical shapes that include pentagonal prisms and octahedrons. The surfaces of the plinths are treated as pictorial; often, they also become awkward ornamental surfaces upon which collaged patterns enhance the geometry of their support.
