Johannesburg Art Gallery

The Johannesburg Art Gallery is situated in Joubert Park, one of the oldest parks in the inner city. The mission of this institution is to contribute meaningfully to the appreciation of visual culture in a multicultural society.

The core functions of the Gallery are to collect works of art-historical importance, conserve them, display permanent and temporary exhibitions, and educate the public around these. It is committed to preserving and providing access to our national heritage and giving due recognition to South Africa’s neglected artists through its exhibitions, publications and education programmes.

The Gallery owes its existence to the vision and dedication of Lady Phillips, wife of mining magnate Sir Lionel Phillips. Lady Phillips, spending each spring and summer of the early 20th century in Europe, became aware of the contrast between the cultural riches of the European capitals and the barrenness of Johannesburg. Artists Represented
The current holdings of the Gallery consists of over 9 000 artworks. The contemporary South African collection is the largest and comprises photography, installations, new media and digital works, paintings, sculptures, prints and ceramics. It includes work by renowned artists Tracey Rose, Robin Rhode, Jane Alexander, Jackson Hlungwani and William Kentridge.

The Gallery also has important holdings of southern African traditional art and artefacts. These objects of great cultural significance encompass the Brenthurst Collection (on permanent loan) and the Jacques Collection of headrests. The historical collection consists of 17th century Dutch and Flemish painting, 18 and 19th century French and British artworks, as well as painting and sculpture by contemporary international artists Alexander Calder, Pablo Picasso, James Rosenquist and Andy Warhol.

The 1934 bequest of over 550 prints from Howard Pim formed the nucleus of the Gallery’s print collections, which now boasts more than 3 000 pieces. It contains work Dürer, Rembrandt, Daumier, Goya, Whistler and Toulouse-Lautrec.

The Gallery presents a prodigious programme of contemporary and historical exhibitions by South Africa, contemporary African and international artists.

Previous Exhibitions
Large-scale retrospectives held at the museum in 2005 featured Dumile Feni, David Goldblatt, William Kentridge, as well as a solo show by seminal performance artist Marina Abramovic. Between 2005 and 2007 the Gallery exhibited mid-career work by Berni Searle (2006) and Roger Ballen (2007). It also held groundbreaking exhibitions in the 1980s and 1990s: such as The Neglected Tradition: towards a new history of South African Art (1930-1988) and Art and Ambiguity: perspectives of the Brenthurst Collection of Southern African Art (1991). Recent contemporary shows have included Guy Tillim, New South African Painting (2006), Johannes Phokela: Translation (2006), as well as the MTN New Contemporaries Award (2006), Dungamanzi / Stirring Waters: Tsonga and Shangaan art from southern Africa (2007), and the internationally travelled exhibition Africa Remix: contemporary art of a continent (2007).
