Aberystwyth Arts Centre

The 900 seater concert hall (the Great Hall), was opened in 1970, with the addition of an Exhibition Gallery and theatre (Theatr y Werin, completed in November 1972 and seating just over 300), marking the final phase of the creation of Aberystwyth Arts Centre by Aberystwyth University. The total cost of the centre at that time was just over £1 million, and the architect of the project was Dale Owen of Percy Thomas Partnership, architects of Cardiff's new Millennium Centre.


Throughout the 80s and 90s the organisation put down strong roots, and gradually developed its facilities to encompass workshops and studios, cafes, shops and bars. The programme became stronger and busier with renowned companies and artists touring to the Centre, whilst the visual arts programme in particular became recognised internationally for its high standard and specialism in contemporary work, particularly for contemporary ceramics. Location And Getting There

The Arts Centre is sited at the heart of the University's Penglais Campus, which overlooks the town of Aberystwyth, and which is situated on the A487 heading north out of the town on Penglais Hill. Full details of the campus can be found on the University's main website www.aber.ac.uk/publications/maps/.

By public transport
The nearest train station is in Aberystwyth, adjacent to the main bus and coach terminals, which run regular services to the University campus. By Car
The Arts Centre is situated at the heart of the University of Wales Aberystwyth. The turning onto campus is from the A487 as you head north out of the main Aberystwyth town centre in the direction of Machynlleth, and is well signposted. There are large car parks adjacent to the Arts Centre and on campus which are free for customers in the evening after 5pm and at weekends.
