Amelia Johnson Contemporary is dedicated to promoting groundbreaking international contemporary art with a view to bringing something out of the ordinary to the Hong Kong audience.

The gallery showcases the work of emerging as well as established artists, exhibiting its stable of acclaimed artists in Hong Kong and overseas. A strong component of our program is our annual exhibition focusing on emerging artists. These exhibitions provide young collectors the perfect entry point into buying art as well as giving young artists an opportunity to reach a wider audience.

SNOWMEN & DISCO: A Winter Collection
3 December 2010 - 15 January 2011

Snowballs & Disco brings together the talents of three diverse artists in a wintery exhibition that encompasses various media and subject matter. In a welcome return to the Hong Kong art scene British photographer Tim Hall presents five of his new photographs selected from his most recent series Mountain. A newcomer to the gallery’s stable of artists is Marc Standing, a young Australian artist of Zimbabwean origin whose work predominately focuses on themes of identity and, more specifically, how we are defined by our cultural identity. Following on from his sell out solo exhibition earlier this year, Tang Kwok Hin has created four new works using the exhibition’s wintery theme as a starting point. LEE SANGHYUN
ROAD TO JOSEON
28th October – 27th November 2010

Opening Party on Wednesday 27th October in the presence of the artist.

Amelia Johnson Contemporary is honoured to present the first solo exhibition of Korean artist, Lee Sanghyun.

During its reign, Joseon consolidated its absolute rule over Korea, encouraged the entrenchment of Confucian ideals and doctrines in Korean society, imported and adapted Chinese culture, and saw the height of classical Korean culture, trade, science, literature, and technology. The Joseon Dynasty presided over two periods of great cultural and scientific growth.

At first glance, and especially to a Western audience, Lee Sanghyun's recent photographs and videos may simply evoke stereotypical clichés of a highly technical, hybridized contemporary Korean society. Works that seem to perfectly blend with the hyper-reality of a world marked by a profusion of images, symbols, ideas and concepts of a society that went through brutal change in the last hundred and fifty years. Lee's digitally montaged imagery is made in vivid, bright pop colours depicting fictitious and historical scenes... [ Read all ]
