BRUNDYN + GONSALVES was established in 2006 in Cape Town, South Africa. The gallery has rapidly earned a reputation as a port of call for keen local and international collectors and curators seeking both established and emerging South African contemporary art talent.

BRUNDYN + GONSALVES is fully committed towards representing, exhibiting and promoting quality contemporary South African career artists, with a particular focus towards ensuring sustainable presence and stature within the global art context. In working to achieve this goal, the gallery regularly exhibits at major local and international art fairs and artists in the gallery’s stable are frequently included in group exhibitions and museum acquisitions the world over. The gallery complements their strong schedule of curated group and solo exhibitions with the publication of significant accompanying catalogues, complete with high resolution full-colour reproductions and informed, scholarly texts.

BRUNDYN + GONSALVES in association with NIROX Projects are pleased to present paint+, the gallery’s first full exhibition outside of Cape Town. The exhibition forms a showcase of new work from a selection of painters; primarily from BRUNDYN + GONSALVES’s stable but also including additional invited artists.
The exhibition required the artists to produce works on canvas in addition to works which move beyond its frame. How this was achieved was left open to each artist to interpret, but the idea is that there is an evident expansion of the artist’s painterly project. As such, artists who have established themselves as painters are taken out of their comfort zones and are required to reconsider the ways in which they approach their work. Conversely, some of the included artists have established a modus operandi of working outside of the canvas frame and are now required to work within it.
In this way, the exhibition prompts the artists to engage with what Paco Barragán has referred to as “expanded painting”, defined as:
