Master Plan - solo exhibition by Jason Wee
18th January to 12th February 2012

Opening night with the Artist - Wednesday 1st February, 7-9pm

"A new plan for the city has been drawn up, in black and white. The civil servant leaves his office at the end of the day and locks up. Left alone, his symbols had other ideas."
(Jason Wee)

Jason Wee's first solo exhibition in almost three years - Master Plan - is a powerful culmination of the artist's most recent academia at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, US. Wee's studies in architecture have evoked personal consideration of scale within a city's 'master plan', which in turn has led the artist to conceive the exhibition's installation, an abstract model of a city but one with a menacing and slightly melancholic blueprint. The grey geometric shapes Wee employs for the high-density buildings will be familiar to viewers of the School show at Singapore Art Museum at 8Q (2008) and the commanding grey palette is one that has followed the artist, not only in his physical workspace, but deliberately through his own series of artworks. The installation includes over 250... [ Read all ]

Forthcoming Exhibitions

Illuminations - A solo exhibition by Aung Kyaw Htet
15 February 2012 – 11 March 2012

Opening Night - Wednesday 22 February 2012, 7-9pm

Chan Hampe Galleries is delighted to present Singapore audiences with an exceptional series of oil paintings from Burmese artist Aung Kyaw Htet, in his solo exhibition Illuminations, which also coincides with the opening of his concurrent exhibition in Bangkok. At the forefront of Burma's contemporary arts scene, it is of no surprise that Aung's paintings have achieved the highest price at auction of any artist from Burma.

Being a devout Buddhist who grew up in a small village, has undoubtedly played a large influence in Aung's artistic practice, as seen through his exquisite balance of realism and sensitivity of subject, using varying shades of grey and a considered use of colour in Illuminations.

Previous Exhibitions

Eric Chan – survey exhibition
5 October – 5 November 2011

Preceding Eric Chan's highly anticipated solo exhibition of new works, Chan Hampe Galleries will present a snapshot retrospective of his paintings from 2005-2010 during the month of October. Amongst the works featured will be the artist's signature floral paintings, imbued with a distinctive glowing aura, which have captured the global attention of private and public collectors alike.

Then, in November of this year, Chan Hampe Galleries @ Raffles Hotel will exhibit an entirely new series in a bold new direction never before taken by the artist. A watershed exhibition, Chan takes great personal risk by painting with a brutal honesty, reflective of the artist’s deep personal struggle to accept the past and embrace the uncertainty of the future.

As one of Singapore’s leading artists, Eric Chan has already gained recognition within Asia and abroad as one of the finest painters of his generation, with representative galleries in Singapore, Hong Kong, and London.
