David Stead Gallery

Opened 2001, the gallery shows Paintings, prints and sculptures by owner David Stead. The often large oil paintings thickly impasto'd are a kind of diary, recording the people and places of David's life. Many of the motifs appear again and again - particularly the mesmeric coastline of the north-east of England with its vast and often empty spaces. Here too are the great castles and abbeys that have attracted artists for centuries. But most of all it is the structure of a landscape to which David is drawn: the underlying bones that come to the surface in the limestone of the upper Dales or the Whin Sill of the northern Dales and Northumberland, a hard, dark igneous rock that forms some of the area's most dramatic Landscapes and supports many of the great castles such as Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh and of course the Holy Island itself - Lindisfarne.

'The River Ure Project'

The exhibition is an artist's response in words and pictures to the river Ure and the landscape that surrounds it: "The River Ure Project is ongoing and I will be charting the course of the river from its source, through Wensleydale and the Plain of York to the sea, painting, drawing and writing about its seasonal changes, the environmental issues that affect the river, its wildlife and its ever changing habitats."

David is teaching 1 an 2 day courses throughout the summer of 2014. Check website for details

Location And Getting There
