Kirsty Whiten: Breeder Badlands
14 January to 10 March 2012

This engaging solo exhibition by Kirsty Whiten deals with the complexities of the new familial unit and contains both large works on canvas and a new series of stone lithographs commissioned and co-published by Edinburgh Printmakers.

Keenly rendered figures, faces and gestures are examined in detail and placed in an unsettling context. The exhibition showcases a body of work spanning nearly two years, from small-scale drawings, through life size oil and varnish paintings shot through with Day-Glo, to new prints.

These are bare and essential images; mothers, fathers and infants in knotted groups, travelling and resting in imagined woodlands and badlands. Stripped of clothes and technology, these families are none the less robustly connected, and surviving.
Whiten works first with models and photography, acting out scenarios and interpreting ideas. Drawing and painting from these photographs, sketches and other found images forms the basis of her practice.
During this co-publishing project with Edinburgh Printmakers, Whiten has discovered an affinity with stone... [ Read all ]

Paul Furneaux: Mokuhanga
28 May to 23 July 2011

An exhibition by well-known Scottish artist Paul Furneaux exploring the theme of landscape through the Japanese woodblock printing technique Mokuhanga.

This exhibition explores the development of the artist’s use of this technique over the past decade, with an emphasis on his most recent series, which has seen his 2D practice develop into 3D wall-mounted sculptural objects.

Mokuhanga, is a traditional Japanese woodblock printmaking technique, using watercolour, gouache or pure pigments applied by brush to cut wooden blocks. After the inking, the printing is done by hand, without a press, using a “baren”(hand disk usually wrapped in a bamboo leaf) onto “Washi”, Japanese hand made paper.

The foundation of Furneaux’s art work has always been about looking and experiencing the landscape with it’s varying vistas and ever changing light conditions. The final manifestation his work, becomes an abstraction and distillation of this contemplation of the landscape, subtly blending the physical reality with the implied.

Submission Policy

The Gallery Working Group (GWG) meets 4 times a year to assess Exhibition proposals. The group is made up of key members of staff including the Director and specialist arts advisors who may also sit on the Board of Directors as a Trustee, either way they must be voted into the role by at least 2 members of the organisation at the annual AGM.

There are no submission deadline dates for proposals, each proposal is considered at the GWG meeting following receipt of the proposal.

Stage 1
Artists applying for an exhibition will be asked to complete a simple summary application form, which once received by email is then presented to the GWG at the following meeting.

This form will request up to 800 words summarising the project, biographies of the artists, any funding confirmed/unconfirmed and 6 digital images. It will focus on the aims, objectives and vision of the project and not the project management of the exhibition.

Stage 2
The proposal is either rejected or the key points are approved for the next stage by the GWG.

Stage 3
