Opening reception: April 29, 6-8 pm
galerie 1 0 3
Kukui'ula Village
2829 Ala Kalanikaumaka
Kaua'i, HI 96756
The exhibit "Ikaika" (meaning to be strong) features recent painting and sculpture by nationally acclaimed artist Mac James of Anahola. The works in "Ikaika" chronicle a story of animals and sea life on and around Kauai, including various trees portrayed as souled beings. James adds a written narrative to many of his pieces in order to expand the tale, working the writing into the composition, not just adding it as an afterthought. Story and folklore thus extend through many of the works, as do the artist’s own tales of Anahola.

Coolly colored, the oil paintings are drawn at times in fresco as well as over dry surfaces with graphite and a variety of local pigments collected from the ground and plants, combined with sea water or rain. The materials and processes James incorporates include red dirt, fungus, mold, rain, sunlight on canvas or sailcloth and a variety of papers weathered outside for a year o... [ Read all ]

Previous Exhibitions

"A-HA" - March 6th - April 25th, 2010

Curated by Inger Tully, curator of exhibitions at The Contemporary Museum in Honolulu, "A-HA" features six artists currently living on the Hawaiian islands of Oahu and Maui: Eli Baxter, Jaisy Hanlon, Vince Hazen, Ryan Higa, Wendy Kawabata and Christopher Reiner.

Utilizing unusual materials and processes to create their pieces the artists’ choice of media is often specific to their underlying concept or idea. The resulting works in two and three dimensions are, as the title "A-HA" suggests, both surprising and unexpected.

Art exhibit "An Affair in the Islands"

Inspired by H.C. Westermann's (1922 -1981) lithograph "An Affair
in the Islands" (1972), this exhibit will feature an eclectic group of
artists for a multi-generational and intercontinental survey of the
island theme.

Opening with Westermann and William T. Wiley's mixed media “Only
One Earth Double Buster” (2008), the exhibit finds its pace through works by
Kauai's artists A.K. Blackburn, Doug Britt, Kathleen Adair Brown, Karen Galley
and Lila... [ Read all ]

Amorous of island art Kauai's Galerie 103 blends local and global talent in one smart space

By Jaimey Hamilton

Special to The Advertiser

Last weekend I fell in love with Galerie 103 on Kaua'i. It would be easy to write this off as an infatuation of the Valentine's commodified schmaltzy variety. Romance was in the air. But as I walked around the spacious gallery with its exposed piping and concrete floors, all imbued with the vital energy of its owner, photographer Bruna Stude, I realized that this was the beginning of a more considered, deeply satisfying long-term affair. It is another positive sign that Hawai'i's contemporary arts scene is going in the right direction. (Other indicators include the ongoing success of Honolulu's thirtyninehotel as a flexible exhibition space and Maui's Paia Contemporary Gallery.Galerie 103 rises above the tourist art galleries that proliferate on the islands, and even puts the college and university art galleries to shame. How? By conceiving of a space that combines the best of local talent with international artists in spa... [ Read all ]
