Galerie Chauvy - Galeriefrance.com

Founded in 1997, the gallery Chauvy focuses on artists, prominent representatives of abstraction of the post-war with an particular interest for their emerging works of the 40s and 50s -. The Gallery opens to the figurative mouvements of the 60s with the presentation of works of Antonio Segui, as well as to artistic practices of the 70s-80s : installation, performance, photography and painting: those of Marcel Barbeau, Grand Prix Quebec 2013, and the photographs of Karl Lagerfeld. Between East and West, abstraction and figuration two creations of Be Rongrond bring a freshness and a repertory of forms totally unexpected. Putting past and present in perspective, they are presented by side with the works of non-figuratif artists of the post-war, not unrelated to the interest in landscape and the back to nature of these painters in the early fifties.

RÉSONANCES
PEINTURE, PERFORMANCE, PHOTO

François Arnal’s Bombardements, Paul Jenkins’ Phenomena, Georges Mathieu’s dazzling Signe, and the practices inspired by the surrealist automatic writing of Marcel Barbeau—a pioneer of Canadian Automatistes—are all experiences of immediate actions exploring the history of gestures and the body, which, in the early 1950s, transformed mainstream thinking in the eld of visual arts.
Barbeau’s transition towards performance, an echo of Dadaist practices revisited by the artist at the turn of the 1970s, highlights the continuity and evolution of an artistic journey, which originated more than half a century ago with the social uprisings of postwar Quebec.

Marcel Barbeau wins Prix Paul-Émile-Borduas
Article by Leah Sandals -
Born on February 18, 1925, Barbeau first came to prominence as a member of the Automatiste movement in 1940s Montreal. This movement emphasized a spontaneous or “automatic” approach to painting and was led largely by one of Barbeau’s teachers, Borduas.
