Henrique van Putten
Our beloved animals
26-03 to 02-05-2010
HBgalerie presents new sculptures by Henrique van Putten. Animals are always central in Van Putten’s work. They are figurative and almost real nature-like creatures. Assemblages of different fabriques.
In Our beloved animals the works are so soft and attractive that they invite the viewers to treat them like real animals, to pet and stroke them. But with a closer look they might hesitate doing so and feel anger and disgust instead.
Most of the animals Van Putten makes are neglected and mistreated. For example: a two legged goat, a squirrel with an exploding huge belly and a cow with swollen eyelids. Her animals confront us with our own neglecting behaviour towards our responsibility to nature. Consolation fails. And the clash between human and nature becomes evident.
Henrique van Putten won the public’s award during the exhibition Een soort salon in Museum Gouda in 2009.
