Forthcoming Exhibitions

Holster Projects is pleased to present the recent drawings of American artist Alyssa Pheobus. In Dar al-, her first solo exhibition in Europe, Pheobus will exhibit works from 2009-2010, including a series in handmade paper and a site-specific floor drawing. Her new work juxtaposes devotional language with architectural allusions; this confluence of stark lines, cryptic texts and skeletal spatial structures marks the threshold of an unknown.

Through a meticulous and meditative process of inscription onto large swaths of handmade paper, Pheobus’ practice dually evokes and subverts the legacy of the arts and crafts movement and the tradition of American folk art. A process of painstaking stitchwork is suggested by the artist’s intensive graphite marks, as each felt-like sheet of paper is reminiscent of the weight and texture of a band of textile. Yet, tradition is undermined by the latent sense of violence and longing present in the severity of her linear forms, intermeshed with fragments of enigmatic language. This juxtaposition, of harsh line and inscrutable text, engages with the inherent binary of both power and desire that... [ Read all ]

Previous Exhibitions

Holster Projects is pleased present Mattia Biagi’s first solo show in the United Kingdom, Recognize Your
Spiritual Need. Intrigued by a generational trend towards self-perceived liberalism that is often
accompanied by a paradoxical close-mindedness towards religion, Biagi’s tar-dripped sculptures call for a
re-examining of contemporary spirituality.

Biagi’s message is universal, without distinction of races, ethnicities, or religions. The exhibition does not
promote any dogma or any particular belief but conveys a positive message of hope. Instead, with works
like Jesus Save Me, Biagi hopes to create an instant awareness of the need for the recovery of spiritual
values in a chaotic society that is constantly moving more and more towards a profit-oriented world.

Born in Italy and living in working in LA, Biagi’s art covers issues from war to materialism in the artist’s
study of his own personal journey.
