June Fitzpatrick Gallery

Established in 1992, the June Fitzpatrick Gallery exhibits fine contemporary art featuring drawings, paintings, prints, and sculpture by established and emerging artists with connections to Maine. The gallery has a prominent profile among the vibrant Maine arts scene.

Located on High Street, right across from the Portland Museum of Art, the gallery focuses on works on paper with frequent exhibitions and a portfolio library. In 2001 the June Fitzpatrick Gallery at MECA (Maine College of Art) opened on Congress Street. Both galleries are in close walking distance from each other.

High Street: William E. Thon

This extensive exhibit of oils, watercolors and sketches by the celebrated Port Clyde artist, William E. Thon (1906-2000), spans several decades and includes many pieces which have never before been publicly shown. A native of Manhattan, William Thon visited Maine in 1940 and was immediately drawn to the remoteness and simplicity of Port Clyde. Within two days of his arrival he purchased four acres of land and made plans to build a simple structure. He went on to live and paint there for the rest of his long and productive life.
Proceeds from sales will benefit the Portland Museum of Art exhibitions and education programs.


Congress Street: Murray Hantman

Hantman (1904–1999) was a major painter in the American art world for more
than 60 years, dividing his time between New York and Maine. Even though he, like many of his generation, moved away from representation into abstraction, nature remained the touchstone for his art, and Hantman was particularly inspired by the unique qualities of the environment and natural light on Maine’s Monhegan Island.
