Opus Art

Established in 2005, Opus Fine Art is one of the UK’s premier Contemporary art galleries.

Our Cotswolds gallery, on Sheep Street, Stow on the Wold, is open Monday - Saturday, from 10am - 4pm. The gallery specialises in limited edition prints and original artwork from our roster of artists and our own collections, with a busy exhibition programme.

We represent the best in cutting edge contemporary art and photography, working exclusively with emerging artists including Chris Acheson, Kim Baker, Rachel Louise Brown, Hector de Gregorio and Karl de Vroomen. Other emerging and mid-career artists on our roster include Dan Baldwin, Lucie Bennett, Rob Carter, Chris Kettle, Josie McCoy and Lex Thomas.

In addition, we’re increasingly becoming the first point of call for secondary market prints by established artists such as Banksy, Peter Blake, Damien Hirst, David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein, Helmut Newton, Bridget Riley and Andy Warhol.

Kim Baker | Twilight
30/09/2013 to 29/10/2013

Kim Baker’s new series of paintings are part of an ongoing journey, an exploration of the genres of landscape and abstraction.

The paintings have three elements working together; the graphic yet painterly skies, the gestural landscape and the abstract floral forms. These floral forms are the protagonists in the paintings and provide a humanist element with the traditional palette of the landscapes creating contrast and tension. The more formally painted skies give the works a sense that you are standing at the edge of the world about to be plunged down into an abyss. If you walk to the edge of the sky, how far will you fall on the other side? Where do these paintings lead the viewer to?

There is a feeling of nostalgia of a land that time forgot, of something about to happen. Despite the seemingly bright playful floral protagonists, there is a feeling of melancholy, of all the seasons and time blurred into one, leaving a feeling of uncertainty, of timelessness of another place.

Influences include the Baroque paintings of Murillo, the landscapes of David Bomberg and Howard H... [ Read all ]

Rachel Louise Brown | The Malevolent Eye
04/11/2013 to 03/12/2013
Rachel Louise Brown is fascinated by the way in which fantasy and myth are woven into reality, setting the language for how we feel, what we imagine and how we project ourselves as an image.

The Malevolent Eye is a culmination of the artist's response to unfamiliar places and strangers, a study into how the elements of subject, location and memory fuse together in creating an image. Through one process Brown shoots at night, alone... capturing the landscape whilst experiencing fear and uncertainty. An imagined gaze watches her alongside the real risk of being caught. It is whilst feeling this unease that a photograph is made; abstracted from reality, turning it into something 'other'. Brown then pushes the fictional narrative further by introducing characters into the 'non-scripted' story. The characters are cast through advertisements online and in local newspapers. People are invited to participate in return for a print of their image.

Most recently Brown has turned the lens up on herself... controlled completely by the camera, the location and the feeling o... [ Read all ]
