The Knapp Gallery

The Knapp Gallery is Philadelphia’s newest contemporary fine art gallery. Owned by Rebecca Knapp, The Knapp Gallery is dedicated to discovering and showcasing the best new and contemporary artists. Rebecca graduated from Sotheby's Institute as their BA Scholar student and proceeded to work with London's most prestigious art galleries and leading collectors for the next ten years. She brings her international expertise and experience to the gallery and is dedicated and proud to be exhibiting the premiere emerging talents of today.

Representing over a dozen artists, Jeffrey Frederick, only twenty-seven years old, the gallery's new managing director, offers a vibrant and exciting new flavor to Philadelphia's Gallery Row. Jeffrey received his B.F.A. in Glassblowing from Tyler School of Art in 2004. He transformed his storefront apartment into The Spot Gallery in December 2005 and then went on to work with the Jane & Bert Gallery followed by The F.U.E.L. Collection as the artistic director.

The Knapp Gallery represents both young, emerging artists as well as more experienced (though virtually unknown) arti... [ Read all ]

The Knapp Gallery is excited to announce “Wide Awake”, artist Gigi Chen’s latest works, for the months of May and June!

Philadelphia, PA – May and June 2008 — The Knapp Gallery is pleased and excited to announce the enchanting artwork of exhibited animator, painter and illustrator Gigi Chen. Chen’s solo exhibition Wide Awake will feature drawings and paintings from her latest group of works, which embody her artistic frustrations through the use of animated characters and animals. These charming works will be on view from May 2nd through June 22nd.

Wide Awake features an array of drawings and paintings which all feature manifestations of Chen’s over-active imagination. Engaged in the frustration of the creative process, Chen finds release by depicting her interior artistic dialogue through the metaphor of the characters her mind creates. These characters, a series of animals, cartoon characters and ‘space kitties’ battle each other for supremacy within the fantastic episodes she depicts in each work.

Chen’s works are simultaneously self portraits and self ana... [ Read all ]

March 7th – April 27th at The Knapp Gallery in Olde City Philadelphia

Philadelphia, PA - March and April 2008 — The Knapp Gallery is pleased and excited to announce an innovative and whimsical show for March and April, featuring the woven headdresses and wall mounted sculptures of Christine DeCicco. DeCicco will bring her unprecedented vision to Olde City in previously unimagined ways.

This show redefines artistic boundaries by combining elements of photography, sculpture and installation with high fashion attitude. DeCicco’s sculptures and headdresses are arresting, they are an exercise in pure creativity and innovation of form. Through her unique approach, DeCicco explores how modern society understands the role of the costume in relation to physical forms.

In DeCicco’s artist statement she attributes influences to Japanese culture, punk rock, and aviation. Her bold and inventive use of medium draws attention to the fantasy created by each of her woven headdresses. She plays with the idea of synthetic and organic, drawing attention to the dichotomy between the synthetic fi... [ Read all ]
