Welcome to My Bird Sanctuary

From oil paintings, photographic prints to sculptural installations, Nelson artist Nic Moon's new works draw inspiration from her urban backyard. She is inspired by contemporary art where the boundaries between the studio and gallery, and the garden and natural environment have become blurred.

In three series of works, Nic searches for answers to the questions:
'What was my environment like when human beings began to settle here, what impact has been made on this place since then and what would this environment become, if humans ceased to exist?'

Five sculptural installations, 'Guardians of the Seed', created from found objects and recycled materials, fabric, timber and seeds, are informed by the issues of sustainability, nurturing, and the rhythms and cycles of nature.

In a series of nine oil paintings, titled 'Backyard Bird Sanctuary', Nic evokes the ancient spirit of extinct and endangered birds, such as the moa and the huia, that lived in the lowland forests of Aotearoa.
