The Toilet Gallery

The Toilet Gallery, London, opened on October 9th 2003, in a media frenzy. Brit Art founders, Gilbert & George, cut the toilet paper ribbon to the tumultuous applause of the assembled crowd, press, two film crews and the BBC ‚Äúlive outside broadcast unit‚ÄĚ. Reported throughout the world, the Toilet Gallery finds itself represented in all parts of America, Canada, France, Germany and the last two sightings, in Holland and Japan.

The Toilet Gallery’s mission is to provide a free and highly adaptable exhibition space to new graduates and up and coming artists as well as providing the local community with an alternative art space and the opportunity to engage with contemporary art. The gallery also has links with Kingston University, where students from the BTEC Foundation in Art & Design have got involved and collaborated on projects, and where exhibiting artists have lectured.

The gallery provides a free, and highly adaptable space for artists to get the chance to engage with and curate a site-specific exhibition, which is often the first opportunity for many new graduates who show there.

Current Exhibitions

MAY 4-25
Christine Ellison aka Polly Fibre

At The Toilet Gallery Polly Fibre will perform RECORD. This new piece that refers to the concept of recording as much as the allure of the vinyl record, explores the seductive qualities of technology through sound and surface. By process of its own construction (live sampling, recording, playback) RECORD tentatively aggravates the relationship between The Live Performance and The Record.

Elements from the live events will be on display in the gallery from May 4th -25th.

Press Releases

Christine Ellison aka Polly Fibre

Christine Ellison is an Irish artist based in London. With a background in graphic design and textiles, her work traverses a range of contexts from printed publications to installations and performances as sonic seamstress Polly Fibre. Since 2005 she has performed in New York and Cleveland, as well as regularly in London and Ireland.

Polly’s performances are a series of indiscreet* compositions that explore aspects of contemporary pop culture through a post-digital aesthetic. In previous works Craftwork (2005-2006), Cut & Paste (2006) and Glitchstitch (2007), digital analogies are renegotiated through materials, tools and machinery, Processes of fashion construction are unravelled to reveal their core elements which in turn become the raw material for building new compositions in a performative context.

At The Toilet Gallery Polly Fibre will perform RECORD. This new piece that refers to the concept of recording as much as the allure of the vinyl record, explores the seductive qualities of technology through sound and surface.
