Dick Beer – an international cubist
3–20 June 2008

Dick Beer was born in London 1893 and was active in Paris during the dynamic decades of early modernism. Around the end of the First World War he developed his own version of cubism that was characterized by its expressiveness. One can find similarities with futurist painters such as Umberto Boccioni, not least in the use of contrasting colours such as red and green. There are also echoes of Die Brücke’s expressive brush work. His subject matter includes portraits, cityscapes and scenes from the circus and horse races. During his years in Paris he belonged to the same circle as Amadeo Modigliani and Henry Laurens. Dick Beer has not been exhibited since the early seventies and it is therefore a great pleasure for Åmells to present Dick Beer – an international cubist which offers a unique opportunity to explore his major cubist paintings.
