Gallery/Dealer Details - Stephen Bulger Gallery

The gallery opened its doors at 700 Queen Street West, Toronto, Canada on March 23, 1995. Since that time, it has presented solo and group exhibitions including the work of historical and contemporary photographers, from across Canada and around the world.

Showing primarily documentary, or information-based, photography, the gallery specializes in photographs that tell stories both large and small.

Although its exhibition roster and vast inventory concentrates on historic, established or mid-career artists, the gallery remains a driving force behind CONTACT, Toronto’s Annual Celebration of Photography, which offers unparalleled opportunities for emerging artists to reach a vast audience.

Through its participation at art fairs, the Gallery has introduced the work of Canadian artists to an international audience while constantly looking for talent in other countries to introduce to our local audience.

Stephen’s first involvement with photography came as a childhood hobby. Eventually studying to become a practicing photographer at Ryerson University, he began curating exhibitions and was the founding director of the Ryerson Gallery at 80 Spadina, Toronto. During his time there he sat on the exhibition committee and managed over thirty exhibitions.

In 1995, he opened the Stephen Bulger Gallery. Since then, he has curated over eighty exhibitions; represented numerous Canadian and international photographers; published catalogues; and participated in many North American art fairs where he has exhibited the work of contemporary Canadian photographers as well as historical photographs. He is a co-founder of CONTACT, Toronto’s photography festival, celebrating their seventh annual event in May 2003 and He is currently the First Vice President of the Board for the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) located in Washington, D.C.
