Take Two
22 March – 4 May 2012, 6-8pm
Arts Gallery, University of the Arts London, 272 High Holborn, WC1V 7EY.
Open Monday – Friday 11am – 6pm

Simon Linington and William Mackrell’s first “solo” exhibition challenges the boundaries of sculpture, performance and art acts, exhibiting works which are created collaboratively but in competition.

Opening at the Arts Gallery on 21 March, Take Two will feature works that appear to be illogical, absurd or destined to sabotage themselves, poised between sincere endeavour and inevitable futility.

Take Two presents a series of performance works through video shown alongside props as relics of the acts. These include the steel bar the duo attempt to hold aloft in a performance of tragicomic endurance, ‘Propping up a Bar’. Preceding the exhibition they will perform ‘Take Two’, leaving marks on the wall as the memory of the action.

Linington and Mackrell’s work is primarily physical and sculptural, dealing with weight, action, space and stature at its core – fundamental concerns of creative practice throughout art history. The duo devises and deploys abstract rules as a conceit to provoke their individual interpretations of their practice and as a means to introduce a sense of chance and constraint.

Key to their work is the introduction of competition within the boundaries of collaborative practice and the absurdist humour that their work ultimately realises. This humour is a reflection of the absurdity that exists in the everyday and is a release for artist and viewer. The artists state: ‘Our refusal to give in to obstacles often provokes repetitive strategies that have the potential to pass through the threshold of tedium and into humour.’

Simon Linington and William Mackrell graduated in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design, University of the Arts London in 2006 & 2005. The Take Two artists’ book will be available for sale in a limited edition of 10, hand finished and numbered by the artists, priced at £300 exclusively from the Arts Gallery.
