LA Artcore is pleased to present the work of Los Angeles artists’ Charles Dickson, Joyce Kohl and Robert Mauthe.
Charles Dickson is a Los Angeles-based artist who uses a variety of media to create three-dimensional artwork and sculpture. Dickson incorporates both his life experiences and urban environment to create pieces that speak to a diverse audience as well as express different perspectives of the African American experience.
Joyce Kohl’s mixed-media sculptures involve a juxtaposition of the ancient and the contemporary both in form and content. Kohl uses industrial materials such as steel and rebar for structure and then contrasts these elements with material such as adobe. Kohl’s sculptures evoke architecture and artifacts and their deliberate ambiguity, raises questions about cultural activities regarding the functional and spiritual.
Robert Mauthe is an artist of infusion – light and metal, air and oxide - using anodized aluminum. His process begins with an electro-chemical treatment that develops an oxide coating on the aluminum surface allowing the coating to absorb dye, producing an integral color. Light performs an essential role in this process, as it passes through the translucency of the dye, the light plays off of the inherent metallic property of the medium adding subtleties and depth to the colors. Working with unpredictable processes and natural materials produces unexpected insights. Born in Vancouver, Canada, Mauthe graduated from Emily Carr College of Art and Design. He currently lives and works in Southern California.
