"Correspondence"
featuring Holt Quentel and Elaine Cameron-Weir

April 7th- May 5th
Opening Reception April 7th, 2011 6pm to 8pm

The stark beauty of Quentel’s finest pieces is illuminated for the first time with the accompaniment of her correspondence from the earliest part of her career. The juxtaposition of these letters with her more mature later works reveals an artist finding her true voice with startling freedom as she places her explorations in the real world. Her work serves as a cliff off which to jump into the fluid work of Elaine Cameron-Weir. According to Thomas McDonell “The intrigue of Elaine's practice is the liquidity with which she moves between the 'work' and it's documentation.” Pictures of her sculptures function as works of art themselves. Often Elaine photographs her sculptures with a point-and-shoot film camera, which touches the photos with color gradation. The effect is Elaine’s unique, invented area for her work. With formal consistency and the poetic economy of her visual language, Cameron-Weir leaves no wasted space. Throughout Correspondence, the works of Quentel and Cameron-Weir exchange thoughts, creating a lyrical dialogue. The answers surface both within themselves and each other, providing a rare and fascinating glimpse into the minds of two extraordinary, complex artists.
