Gehard Demetz. OBJEKTE

October 4 – 27, 2012

Opening reception: Thursday October 4, 2012 – 7 p.m.

Gehard Demetz is back to galleria Rubin for a new exhibition. It is the latest event in a brilliant year which has seen the artist participate in Art Basel Miami Beach, The Armory Show and his first one man exhibition in the United States: “Threshold Space” at the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York.

This upcoming show, by the title of “Objekte”, will display four new works . The first object appeared in the solo exhibition “Contenitore” at the Beck & Eggeling Gallery in Düsseldorf.

The new sculptures are not representations of human figures. They are details of architectures and decorations taken out of their original context and rearranged in order to provide a personal vision of the sacred .
“Objekt 1” represents a fuel tank supported and pierced by steeples and pinnacles.
“Obekt 3” originates from a wall tabernacle enriched by gothic decorative elements. As it moves upwards it tilts to a side as if attracted by a magnetic force.
“Objekt 5” is a reliquary which underwent an unexpected deformation in its central part where the relic is changed with an object carved by Demetz himself.

The show proposes a new repertoire of imagery conceived alongside his more typical production. In these objekte, together with an attention to important themes in modern sculpture (ready made) and the ideas of Walter Benjamin (loss of the Aura of the work of art), there is a painstaking accuracy in defining small and tiny formal solutions that stem from the tradition of woodcarving.

In the words of the curator Tobia Moroder: [...] these objects have manifold interpretations: they unveil, in a refined and ironic way, the superficial attitude in which we approach the sacred, and are an encouragement in revising our beliefs in the values of current western culture.

Gehard Demetz was born in Bolzano in 1972.
He lives and works in Selva Val Gardena, Bolzano.
