Gallery/Dealer Details - Chambers Fine ArtChambers Fine Art was established in New York in 2000 by Christophe W. Mao. Named after Sir William Chambers who was a pioneer in introducing principles of Chinese garden design in the late eighteenth century, the gallery was one of the first in the USA to specialize in Chinese contemporary art. From the beginning the exhibition program has alternated between monographic exhibitions devoted to established artists such as Lu Shengzhong, Hong Hao, Wang Tiande, Wang Jianwei, Qiu Shihua, Rong Rong and inri, Shi Jinsong and group exhibitions of work by younger artists. In 2007 Chambers Fine Art opened a gallery in Beijing in a striking new building designed by Ai Weiwei. The first exhibition in the new space, Net: Reimagining Space, Time and Culture examined the relationship between many of the artists associated with the gallery since its inception. Since then solo exhibitions devoted to the work of established figures such as Tan Dun, Qiu Zhijie and Hong Lei have alternated with group shows of emerging artists.
In addition to the publication of fully documented catalogs frequently designed by the artists themselves and limited editions, Chambers Fine Art is also actively involved in the promotion of contemporary Chinese art in such international exhibitions as Documenta and the Venice Biennale.
